Four bombs go off in Bangkok
Nation Multimedia ^ | December 31, 2006

Four explosives went off almost simultaneously in Bangkok, injuring at least 20 people as the city people have just started to celebrate the New Year's eve.

One person was dead at the Big C supermarket, Sapan Kwai branch, where witness saw a man dropped a grenade from a pedestrian bridge, police said.

At least 20 were injured at the Victory Monument when a powerful bomb went off near a bus station.

At the Klong Toei area near the Na Ranong intersection, a bomb hidden in a trash can near a Chinese spirit shrine exploded and injured two bypassers. The explosion caused a secondary explosion to a number of cookinggas cylinders that were situated nearby.

At the Season Square Shopping Mall, a loud explosion went off at the parking space, creating a panic but no injury.

Assume your figure is correct. Are you suggesting that it's acceptable to act like an utter fool 1% of the time?

Wait, I see your point. :)

Actually, there's one Muslim general but he's the leader, and one of his announced priorities was to "rethink" the pacification efforts directed at the Muslim radicals in a particular area and drop the military approach.

You'd think this would make them calm down, since it would seem they'd gotten what they wanted, but obviously, they don't feel they've gotten enough yet. ETA set off its bomb in Madrid yesterday while the Spanish government had essentially announced that it was laying off the hard line and "negotiating" with them. Shows you the foolishness of "negotiating" with terrorists. They interpret it as weakness and redouble their efforts.

Because of stupid posts like this, I will no longer be posting any first hand information on this thread. I am living in Bangkok and watching this unfold on local news. You just lost your source. Have a nice New Years.

LOL... I appreciate you posting here, please don't be so uptight... without you posting, where else we can find any information about this on Bangkok local news? Kop khun krub!

Killjoy, you misunderstand Bon mots. What he posted is called a "sarcasm". He is just pointing out that the mainstream media is not reporting the most obvious information that the bombings are caused by islamic extremists.

God bless all who are involved. And I pray for your safety too killjoy.

Frustratingly enough the BBC just reported that the Thai police are suspecting Thaksin supporters and ruling out Muslims. Like you and much of the local news, I think that it is most similar to the southern Islamists.

Yep!

Gotta wonder if the execution of Saddam JUST BEFORE New Year celebrations all over the world -- with the attendant LARGE gatherings of merry-makers -- isn't an exercise in the old Hegelian Dialectic.

If the term isn't familiar, look it up.

Americans have a penchant for dark humor and sarcasm during times of stress. Blame it on Mark Twain! If you read those posts literally, you will be upset. If you look at the underlying message; it is a serious point wrapped up in an apparent bon bon; an effective means of conveying a point in a discussion. Twain used humor to discuss slavery in the U.S.; a very unfunny topic, indeed.

This story presents the fact of the explosions as if they are some sort of natural phenomenon, like a tornado touching down in a trailer park. The story does not even note 'responsible parties are unknown, at this time'. Posters are noting the reporter's total lack of interest in who planted these bombs.

Here's view looking from the pedestrian walk at Sapan Kwai (buffalo bridge.) This is from where the grenade was thrown.
I lived within a block of this area for over 3 years.

Just an update to the thread that two lives have been lost and a third is very critical. Public celebrations at such locations as Siam Paragon, Central World and the ever sleasy Patpong have been cancelled. BTS and Subway are open to get people home. No Pi Mai - New Years in Bangkok.

The sarcasm you see is an outpouring of anger over political correctness trumping what some view as common sense.

I find the posts distracting and immature as well, however the above explanation really is the reason for them. And I have to say I understand. The posts are less stupid than the media and the stripsearches of the Geritol set.

Beyond that, I would truly appreciate updates on the situation. I have a brother in Bangkok who hasn't checked in with me yet.

Sir, would you like to be added to the "Thai Ping" list?
It's low volume normally.

> This sort of outrageous and senseless violence isn't typically seen further north and towards the Bangkok, Chiang-Mai, and Chiang-Rai areas. <

Well, the violence just hit BKK. Can Chiangmai be far behind?

[Last time I was in CNX, I saw a HUGE mosque, newly constructed, a few km outside the city center -- just off Sankamphaeng Road. Looks as if a lot of Saudi money has been at work there. Bombs to follow?]
