There is plenty of information if you search for it on the science of hanging. The loop of the hanging noose merely acts as the fulcrum, and when the body reaches the end of the drop, the noose tightens--yes, but it causes the large heavy knot to very rapidly slap the side of the head causing the spinal cord to separate, the theory being, instant death.
