From the gallows pre hanging image, I see what appears to be a piece of pipe inside the knot, with the noose rope running thru it. Yes, the tube or pipe is inside the coils. The flange on the end of the tube or pipe is against the head when the noose is pulled tight. It amplifies the leverage of the knot to ensure the spine and spinal cord are severed.

Still questioning the padded neck and the trench coat. The neck padding was to protect the rope! They didn't want gore spurting onto it. The trenchcoat? They didn't tell him where he was going. He probably thought he was going to another court hearing.
