Convicted in a show trial that certainly appeared to have been timed to finish on the eve of last month's US elections, Iraqi President Saddam Hussein was hanged in a show execution that just as certainly seems to have been timed to be carried out before the end of the worst year of the Iraq War.
Hussein was a bad player. He needed to be held to account. But even bad players deserve fair trials, honest judgments and justly-applied punishments. The former dictator got none of these.

A niney-seven-page report by Human Rights Watch, issued late last month, details the severe problems with the trial. The report, based on close monitoring of the prosecution of the former president, found that:
"(The) Iraqi High Tribunal was undermined from the outset by Iraqi government actions that threatened the independence and perceived impartiality of the court."
The Iraqi administrators, judges, prosecutors and defense lawyers lacked sufficient training and expertise "to fairly and effectively try crimes of this magnitude."

The Liberals are now starting their canonization of Saddam, another victim of you-know-who.
OK, the trial might not have been fair; but, the execution was!
The spin machines are overheating on this one. Saddam is really kind of lucky that he even got a trial, all things considered. And his execution was amazingly humane. Personally, I'd have more appreciated their use of the shredding machine to the noose.
Where was this group when these people's families were being tortured and killed?
Not so fast... communists wrote the book on 'show-trials'. If anyone should know, it's the pencil-necked commisars at the Nation
I have long been a fan of his being executed by decompression sickness.....give that tyrant the "bends" and let him experience the pain he gave others.
Why arent these Saddam lovers crying about the "Show" trial of Libby by Fitzgerald.

"Saddam is really kind of lucky that he even got a trial, all things considered. "
No kidding. You didn't see all this hand-wringing over Ceaucescu (sp?) in Romania.
Actually, Saddam should never have been granted this much time. He should have been dealt with during Gulf War I when every yokel in the country (well, except for the usual suspects) screamed for Coalition Forces to drive into Baghdad and finish him off.
But no-o-o-o-o.
We ceded our national efforts to the directives and wishes of the UN. Had common sense prevailed and American force been fully applied, we may never have had to face 911 or the ongoing consequences.
More here.
When it comes to the media and liberals, there is no such thing as a fair trial that involves the death penalty.
Saddam was still powerful enough to direct resistance and influence from prison, even from isolation. His continued living would have given noble followers the incentive to plan and plot his rescue from the evil US empire.
It's all Bush's fault of course.
And all the victims were just 'show victims'...
I agree - it WAS a show trial and a show hanging...
They SHOULD have shot the sonuvabitch as soon as he showed his face climbing out of his rat hole.....then dragged his body through the streets of Baghdad before hanging the corpse from a flag pole.....
Semper Fi
These bozos are wasting time preaching about fairness to Saddam. He was treated fairly because he was given a trial and failed to make the case for staying alive. He knew he had no leg to stand on. This judgment is no different than other murderers get. No one is surprised at this sentence. They knew it would come. Even Hitler committed suicide, he had no case, Saddam was a bigger coward by trying to use the left to escape his fate. Next week, no one will be thinking about Saddam.
The left can be counted on to feel sorry for murderous dictators (Saddam) unless the dictators are on the right (Pinochet).
What kind of moron writes stuff like this?As a matter of fact it looks like they have a better system than we do!Our courts just keep things going on and on and on with no end in site and that's not justice. This is just one more bit of liberal hypocrisy as we do not care about the extermination of the unborn but want murderers to live and go free. There's no reason why an appeal can't be finalized in 30 days and this would help to make room for criminals in the prison system.
