Heavy snow traps 61 Greek tourists in Jordan

Thu Dec 28, 6:14 AM ET

Heavy snowfall in Jordan has trapped 61 Greek tourists near the southern archaeological site of Petra.

"Yesterday (Wednesday) we rescued 10 tourists from this group, women and children, while 61 others are snowed in and spent the night in two buses in the Eil region, 17 kilometers (11 miles) from Petra," civil defense official Lieutenant Colonel Farid al-Shareh said Thursday.

Rescue operations continued into the night Wednesday but heavy snowfall made it impossible to reopen the road linking Petra to the capital, Amman, 230 kilometers (143 miles) away, he said.

"Blankets and supplies have been furnished for the blocked-in tourists," he said, adding that they "are doing fine" and would likely be evacuated Thursday.

Amid frigid temperatures and snow in much of the region, soldiers and police have succeeded in rescuing 1,250 Jordanians and tourists who were trapped by snowfall on the roads in southern Jordan, he added.

Let me be the first to say it.

Global warming.

Any and all weather anomalies, any and all weather extremes, must be blamed on "Global Warming".

Oh, and /s

We are really seeing signs of GW here in Denver--back to back snow storms. I hope we DO NOT get a lot of rain this coming spring/summer. I hate droughts.

:)

We are having a mild winter here in New Hampshire.

In a way, I envy you.

I rather like snow.

This year's mild winter is being blamed on global warming.

A couple of years back, we got 12 feet of snow in a 6 week period. The enviro-loons blamed that on global warming, too.

Last year, we got a 2-foot snow storm with temperatures near zero F (-20 C). Many folks in the area, including me, had never seen it snow when it was that cold. Global warming got blamed for that, too.
