I checked it out. They are both the same. Thank you. There must be a better video out there that shows the hanging better.

This is not good at all. Speaking as someone who is pro death penalty and obviously in favour of saddams punishment, this video and the way the execution was carried out does not leave me with confidence in iraqi justice.
These guys should have been vetted and everything done as dignified as the original video suggested. In the end we now have a mob scene with enemies allowed far too close and having a good old banter with saddam. How could people be allowed to record it?
Camera flashed also should not have been allowed. It was not dignified, it was chaotic and a shambles.
I am very dissaspointed that the execution will be remembered for all the wrong reasons.

"A firing squad is used for military executions."
That's not true. The state of Utah uses firing squads. Gary Gilmore was shot by a firing squad on January 17, 1977, at 8:07 AM in Utah for murder. John Albert Taylor was executed by firing squad in 1996, also in Utah. Idaho and Oklahoma are two other states that allow for firing squads, although both also have lethal injection as a method and since that time all death row inmates have chosen the latter method to die. |

Scripture clearly exhorts against rejoicing at an enemy's fall-" Specifically, where is that exhortation?
Somebody may already have answered your query, but just in case, here is one verse (there are several):
Proverbs 24:17 (NIV) Do not gloat when your enemy falls; when he stumbles, do not let your heart rejoice...
F Y I
The Song of Miriam
"Then Miriam the prophetess, the sister of Aaron, took the timbrel in her hand; and all the women went out after her with timbrels and with dances. And Miriam answered them:
"Sing to the LORD
For He has triumphed gloriously!
The horse and the rider
He has thrown into the sea!"
Exodus 15:20 (See verses 1-18 for the long version called the Song of Moses)
IMO, sounds like big time rejoicing to me. And if that doesn't prove there is gloating and rejoicing over one's enemies in the Old and New Testament then I can quote many more sections of the Bible as verifiable references. Therefore, the Bible does not clearly exhort against rejoicing over your enemies -- specifically evil enemies.
" ... for he who is hanged is accursed of God ..." Deuteronomy 21:23b
Saddam and muslims understand the deep symbolism of hanging. This will be a long-remembered mark in Iraqi history and another lovely notch in the Hussein family's long belt of insanity.

Just because Utah does it, doesn't mean it's not used for military executions. Also, I don't think that Iraq is in Utah's jurisdiction. :-)

Hmm... I must have misunderstood your post in 474 saying: A firing squad is used for military executions. If a firing squad were granted to Saddam, then it would indicate POW status, which he was denied...and if he had POW status, it would trigger many other things by the Geneva Conventions. I understood that paragraph to mean that only the military uses firing squads, therefore, the use of a firing squad on Saddam would indicate a military execution. I guess it doesn't say that. Many thanks for the correction. :-) |

Anyone remember the name of Saddam's Communication Minister? He kept telling the people nothing was happening. My neighbor asked me today and I couldn't remember.

Again, Iraq ain't Utah, and Utah ain't Iraq. :-)

I don't think Anderson Cooper has been often caught asking a reasonable question so his guests could give informed opinions Andy Cooper has a pretty face. His mother is a fashion designer. His dad died when Anderson was 11. His brother commited suicide in front of him. He is reputedly gay. He has a bachelor's degree -- less education than George Bush. His looks and fashionable New York connections have taken him far, but in order to be regarded as serious by educated people, much less by people with common sense, he would have to develop a greater depth of credentials, either via education or meaningful experience.
Don't hold your breath.

Sully, with respect, there is a difference between praising God joyfully for having delivered one from a tyrant, and gloating on a thread with pictures such as the one you posted (and I posted one earlier of Saddam and Dan Rather promising to see each other on the other side). I think we all fall short of the glory of God, myself included, but cannot agree that the example you gave gives us carte blanche to gloat over the death of even one as evil as Saddam. Relief, yes; gloating, no.

Proverbs 10:11 "When the wicked perish there is glad song."We agree on that; however, there is glad song and then there is down-and-dirty gloating. See post 496.
And btw, Happy New Year, Alouette! I enjoy your many spirited posts. All the best to you and family...
