Candidates with NO real backing, no BIG BUCKS, and little support, don't win elections; let alone primaries. Really, it IS as simple as that!

It has ALWAYS been this way; though not really the way that YOU put it!

And with the advent of T.V., it has gotten to be much more of a popularity contest, based on looks and perceived conclusions, much of which have nothing at all to do with the case.

Still and all, from the time of Washington on down, Joe Shmoe never has a chance.
