My guess is that most are lost to skunks. A large skunk can wipe out several hives in a week.

Now that the animal rights nutballs have succeeded in making fur next to worthless there are few people trapping and skunks are over populated.

Honey bees wont fly at night but if the hive is disturbed they will crawl out. Skunks eat them as fast as they come out.
