WASHINGTON -- The incoming Democratic chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee said no new U.S. troops should be sent to Iraq, setting up a potential political battle over President Bush's tentative plan to deploy tens of thousands of additional forces to try to stabilize the country.

Joe was a busy boy yesterday. For non-subscribers, Dreazen says Biden and other Democrats will grill Condi Rice before the Foreign Relations, thereby beating Armed Services to the punch. Biden is the living embodiment of the adage that every Senator sees a President in the mirror -- though his chance is slim and none. His proposal for partitioning the country and sharing oil revenues may be adopted in the end, though not until the next Administration and not without an accomodation with the Iranians. Why should the Mullah's settle for the Sunni South when they could control an expense ranging from the Afghan border through Iran, Iraq, Syria, Lebanon, Gaza and perhaps the West Bank?

I wonder if he got his proposed terms of surrender already written?

I didn't know that Biden was Commander in Chief. I guess I need to get out more.

I am sure that Biden has spoken to any foreign minister that will listen to him about this...of course, going around and behind Bolton's back, and Condi's back.
I am sure he has reassured Iran that when HE becomes POTUS, that they will get whatever they want.

Joe never served. He's a lawyer. He files briefs.

Biden's only chance to become Commander-in-Chief is to emigrate.

Biden's been floating his solution for at least two years.

I can't believe I used to like this guy.

I wish President Bush would just get on with it and announce the surge before any hearings can take place and thus really p*ssing them off.

Either do it, or shelve the idea.

Apparently, while the rest of us weren't paying attention, the Constitution was changed. The President is no longer Commander-in-Chief, but must obey whatever Committee Chairman decides to try his/her hand at running the country.
I guess that Bill Clinton is certainly relieved that the Constitution wasn't changed on his watch, he even managed to declare war (Serbia) without getting permission from Congress.

It is vital to the Democrats that the US lose in Iraq - that outcome serves their interests, and they are prepared to sacrifice the entire country to their lust for power. They will do everything they can to make it happen.

I wonder if Bush actually doesn't want to add troops but lets on like he does to let the RATS prevent him from doing it. Spin their wheels for awhile, so to speak.

Either do it, or shelve the idea.Exactly. Bush has the authority, duly granted by Congress. If he dicks around with the 'rats looking for "bipartisanship," then we're sunk and he deserves whatever feces they sling at him from their perches in the lower branches.

Maybe he wants the Democrats to be the party that lost Iraq, much as they lost China. In contrast, Nixon got the deal in 1973 that the North Vietnamese offered in 1968, so unfairly it became Nixon's war rather than Johnson's and Kennedy's. Bobby Kennedy and Robert McNAmara actually played both sides of the street as architects of a no-win war and later apostles of peace.
