Powerful storms ripped through Central Florida Monday Afternoon destroying mobile homes and toppling trees and injuring at least nine people.

Four were serious. At least one of those is critical.

The National Weather Service says an F2 tornado tore through the area.

Early damage reports say as many as 200 mobile homes in the DeLand area suffered significant damage. For mobile home parks were near the intersection of State Road 11 and U.S. 17. A gas leak forced evacuations.

"We took four hurricanes," said one man. "But nothing like this."

The Sutton Place Apartments in Daytona Beach were also severely damaged. Hundreds of people were homeless. The Daytona City Church was opened as a shelter.

At Embry Riddle Aeronautical University in Daytona Beach, a spokesman said 50 of 65 planes were damaged. Some were flipped over, some had wings torn off, and some were slammed against a building. A small fire broke out in a support building but it was extinguished...

Now that's a little errieeee! That's the plot of the Miami CSI episode on the USA Channel last night, even down to the F2 strength and it was a re-run.

It's sad for this to happen on any other day, but to happen on Christmas Day is almost unbelievable! However, everyone knew this front was going to power through here.

My weather alert radio bounced me out of bed at 6:16 a.m. with the first Tornado watch/warnings.

Thankfully, this line of tornadoes just missed my area by 10-15 miles.

In North Port, Sarasota County, we had rain & high winds about 3 hours ago.
No damage in this neck of the woods. The girls are out shopping @ Walgreens.

Now the streets are drying, but the air is still rather thick.

My wife was in the middle of it in south Seminole county. By the grace of God (endless thanks unto Him), neither she nor any of our friends and neighbors in the neighborhood suffered anything worse than a couple of branches knocked off some trees, a couple of brownouts, and lots and lots of rain.

I pray that God will help to heal those who lost their homes or property or, worse, were injured. Special prayers offered up to the individual who was critically injured by the storm.

Local TV reports that there are now 2 critically injured persons; both taken via chopper to Halifax Med. Center in Daytona.

Yes, we are all very fortunate to have missed what others didn't. The fact that no one was killed is testament to God's divine protection.

Buildings and things can be replaced, people can't.

We're all praying that the folks affected get help and healing and are able to enjoy Christmas despite the damage/destruction.

Sounds like it was on par with the storm back in March 93. I lived in Kissimmee at the time and the day was a beautiful, but at around 2;00 AM I was awoken by what seemed like a feight train of a wind. IIRC there were many tornadoes that day in central Florida.

Over in Mickey land light drizzle all day and a good downpour for an hour or so about 1:00 P.M.

Looks like we dodged a bullet.
