Muslims played a critical role in some key elections this year. But elected officials won't take them seriously if they don't continue to organize and turn out Muslim voters, two politically active Muslims said Saturday at a convention in Dearborn.
If there are efforts to register Muslims to vote, educate them about the candidates and get them to the polls to vote for one candidate, politicians will court their support, Jameel Johnson, an aide to U.S. Rep. Gregory Meeks, D-N.Y., said at the Muslim American Society and Islamic Circle of North America convention.
"It is our job to make the Muslim vote visible to candidates," he said.
A strategy of organizing Muslim voters worked in Virginia this year in the U.S. Senate race.
The effort was so organized that Muslim taxi drivers in northern Virginia took the day off to ferry Muslims to the polls, said Imam Mahdy Bray, a speaker at the convention. Volunteers also made phone calls to Muslims in Virginia to urge them to vote, he said.
As a result, Democrat James Webb ousted incumbent Republican George Allen by about 9,000 votes in a race in which 50,000 Muslims went to the polls -- 47,000 of them voting for Webb, Bray said.
"You can make a difference when you work," Bray said.
Mohammed Shoman, 18, of Dearborn said the conference inspired him to get involved. "We realize how much our influence is" now, he said.
I will never vote for a muslim. I will never be friends with a muslim. I will never befriend a muslim. If a muslim achieves political power I will oppose him. If he achieves political control I will fight him. If a muslim threatens me, my family, or my country, I will kill him!
Sorry Charlie.
My statement was factual, which negates your calling it bigotry. It has nothing to do with race; it did have plenty to do with culture; those are vastly different.
As for the 'insensitive' and 'offensive', well, I don't do PC. You'll have to go elsewhere for that. You have no guaranteed right not to be offended. So, if you are so easily offended, maybe you shouldn't be on the Internet at all. It has allot is offensive.
And one point of information (on which my statement was based): Muslims are required to try to institute Sharia law when their numbers reach approximately 20% of any given population. They are already trying to push it in some Canadian communities. Can Dearbornistan be far behind?
You missed the sarcasm.
An anti-truth, anti-freedom collective aligns with another anti-truth, anti-freedom collective.
How would Muhamad vote?
21 - "And when their numbers become sufficient, they will be pushing for Sharia law to replace the US, state and local laws they are subjected to.
*Every* Muslim I have personally known (perhaps ten), has fled sharia law and the fundamentalist idiots who enforced it in their home countries.
Educated, moderate Muslims are THE great untapped resource in the GWoT, but we just lump them in with the Islamo-fascists and wonder why they feel alienated?"

So, we should trust our lives to 'bad' muslims, who disobey their religion, and don't kill us infadels, or enforce sharia law?
The ones who have a religion which instructs them to lie to us infadels, and trick us?
What if they decide to become 'good' muslims and follow the koran, and attempt to convert, tax, enslave or kill us infadels who live in the war zone (dar el harb - the non islam world)?
What if they decide to do as their imams religious leaders instruct and impose their religion on the whole world, as religious tolerance is not allowed.
And if so, why are they still moslem? Could it be because 'good' muslims are commanded to kill 'bad' muslims who attempt to leave the religion?
Why not? Everybody comes to the internet to get offended.
Why not?
Buddhists vote, evolutionists vote, atheists vote.
Why shouldn't Muslims?
"under various schools of Islamic thought"
That's fine as it goes, but it's anything but a level playing field for all branches of Islam, either in the Middle East, Western Europe, or the United States. "Them what has the gold makes the rules", and it's petrodollar fueled Wahhabism that dominates the madrassas here or anywhere else.
Wouldn't we all love to see schools of Sufi mysticism (headquartered in Tashkent, Uzbekistan) flourishing here? It's said Sufi Muslims in those institutes welcome guest speakers of other faiths. But that's not the reality here.
"When in Rome..." Mohammed Atta and the other 9/11 mass murderers were frequenting strip clubs and consuming alcohol before committing their dastardly acts.
Anyway, doesn't any Muslim, regardless of degree of religiosity, have to reckon with the possibility of being watched by the fanatical faithful?
The question of whether a `moderate Muslim' is one who merely fails to adhere to _the currently enforced definition_ of what a Muslim should be, has IMHO not yet been addressed on this thread.
Thank you for responding. I thought maybe you had a greater insight than the rest of us. As for me, I can only go by what I hear, what I see (altho of course virtually everything is filtered thru some sort of media) and what I have read on the Koran. Nothing gives me much of a warm fuzzy that it could be a peaceful religion, but I'm open to changing my mind if I see evidence.
As for individuals, I'm sure many Muslims would love to just live their lives out and not be caught up in religious ferver. But I could say the same for many Christians.
susie
And they are proud of that?
muslims in the US are already trying to change our laws to suit themselves, including allowing women to take drivers ID pictures completely veiled, allowing prayer calls broadcast of loudspeakers throughout neighborhoods 5 times a day, for muslim prayers, and at least one congressman to swear to uphold the constitution, with his hand on the koran, in spite of the fact that the koran itself prohibits him from doing this.
Then they're not true Muslims, they're something else. Lapsed Muslims, perhaps?
If they believe the Koran, they must believe in the supremacy of Sharia law above all else. They obviously are fleeing from their own religious beliefs.
They would do well to look elsewhere for a set of beliefs, but not to Islam. I would recommend Christianity. For one thing, it is the truth and not a false religion founded by a murderous madman.
I could be wrong, put picking up dead Muslims for more than seven months sounds like ... what our Lord will have us do.
Hey man, they're good for the economy, that's all that matters! Some victims are so pathetic you just can't feel sorry for them.
Merry Christmas, and death to the Infidels!
Even their love of the Muzzies will vanish when they are faced with religious law.
It won't matter. By the time they realize what's happening, it'll be too late. They're the useful idiots who will give them the power, and then offer up their necks.
