When nature calls during a debate or vote in the House of Representatives, what's a member of Congress to do? The answer, even as the first female speaker of the House prepares to be sworn in next month, depends on gender.
The members-only House men's room, with its shoeshine stand, fireplace and television tuned to floor proceedings, is nestled a few paces from the House chamber, beside the speaker's lounge, flanked by Capitol police. How convenient.
Reaching the women's equivalent is more challenging. It entails traversing a hall where tourists gather, or entering the minority leader's office, navigating a corridor that winds past secretarial desks and punching in a keypad code to ensure restricted access. Not so convenient.
So when Speaker-designate Nancy Pelosi, D-San Francisco, takes the gavel, she may revisit, along with the Iraq war and raising the minimum wage, the question of potty parity.
Starting in January, the 435-member House will have a record 71 women. (The 100-member Senate will have 16 women, also a record.) Asked whether female House members should also get a loo off the chamber, Pelosi said, "I'm all for it -- let's find a spot."
Mischievously, she said she's eyeing the men's room just steps from the chamber, "but the gentlemen, they just won't get out of there."

"Every screw is historic. "
Like Clinton said, "The worst BJ I ever had was fantastic."
I'll bet more than half these women would prefer to use the men's room anyhow. In fact, some of them will probably insist on it.
Exactly--it makes sense that the women's facilities wouldn't be right there. The building was built at a time when women didn't generally get elected to Congress.
Here in Texas, women's restrooms have MORE toilets than men's, for the same population...like double. Is that PARITY, or CHARITY?

It is rational. Men can use urinals. Women can't.
Besides that women more often have charge of small children, who have absolutely no understanding of "Hurry up! Others are waiting." Women have more complicated clothing and sanitary napkin issues.
It just steams me when at a concert or large event women have long lines and men can just walk in and out of their restrooms.
She'll probably add a trnasgender bathroom.
San Fransicko Democrat values.
Oh, we can probably look forward to 'Barney's Bathhouse' too.
Get out your wallets. Think the military paid a lot for toilet seats? You ain't seen nothin' yet, now that Nancy's in charge of the checkbook!
Why doesn't she hold a Bakesale with the proceeds going toward a "Ladies Room?" 'The Beast' could bake her arsenic-laced Chocolate Chip Cookies for the cause.
Solidarity, Ladies!
(Is "The First 100 Hours" up YET?)
Oh my goodness ... they would have to actually be seen by and have to walk amongst the unwashed masses and lowly secretaries to get to the bathroom. The horror of it all ...
Isn't that jumping jim jeffords office?
will Caligulosi order an orgy room and bath chambers to go with her san francesco values?
Instead it's about where Members of Congress go to the bathroom. I'm struggling to come up with a less important topic than that. Comfort level of gopher holes, maybe.
Caligula also demanded a sky bridge to the temply of Jupiter from his palace. This way he could portray himself as an emperor who communes with the gods.
Caligulosi wants her own recognition as a empress.
IOW Speaker Caligulosi demands imperial throne.
Pelosi demands taxpayers pay for new throne for her.
Caligulosi has spoken!
"It just steams me when at a concert or large event women have long lines and men can just walk in and out of their restrooms."
Why whine about it at FR? Since you seem unhappy with basic human design, wouldn't prayer be more appropriate?
Won't help because she is always full of it.
wouldn't prayer be more appropriate

God helps those who act.
Women do often take over the men's rooms. And,,,it does seem that management is finally get the idea. Architects are now designing restrooms that can be converted to either women's or men's facilities depending upon the numbers of women or men expected at an event.
Also...my mentioning the problem here on Free Republic may encourage a developer or architect posting here to reconsider the designs of the restroom facilities.

Caligulosi will introduce a line parity bill which forces men to wait in the toilet line an equal amount of time. There will be a new federal agency developed, funded and union employee manned to measure and determine the appropriate time waits. Each public restroom will have a potty monitor as part of the Supervised Health Inspection Team Department of FEMA.

I am amazed at all of the hostile male comments on this thread. Shouldn't you guys be at the mall today desparately trying to find a Christmas present for your significant other? If there are only male bathrooms close by and the women's bathrooms are much farther away, then, yes, there should be some bathrooms for women to use close by.
Go to the men's room. I doubt that it would be too traumatizing.
