Anyone who's traveled in Malaysia and Indonesia can testify to the friendly, open-minded character of most of the citizens. Every nation has a legend, and in Malaysia there's one an American traveler might encounter it. It goes something like this:
"We have made it. We beat colonialism, we beat nationalism, we beat war, we beat poverty, we beat the Asian crisis ... let's show you around and make money together."
In Indonesia, there's a less obvious directionality than one might notice among the Malaysians, and an American encounters more of a sort of national theme of delight and wonder:
"You American, you have come so far... we admire you. Here's our beautiful country, we're pleased you like it, we want to share it some more... so let's get to know each other."

not sure how you can write about SE Asian moslems without addressing the terror campaign punctuated by beheadings of Buddhist teachers in South Thailand, and culminating in the overthrow of the PM by Moslem general, who wants to give the region some sort of Moslem-dominated autonomy. Is the bad acting in the region the reason why John Howard has such a similar perspective on Iraq that President Bush has?
I have a Malaysian friend. He's one of the "good Muslims" and I agree whole-heartedly that while radical Islamic doctrine is a threat to 21st century Western civilization, not all Muslims are radicals, and the Indonesians and the Malaysians are proof.
Remember, the Arabs don't have that much respect for them. After all, they're Muslim brothers, but they're not Arabs!
Wasn't their just an article here on FR detailing how Indonesia misappropriated tsunami aid for some nefarious purpose? It seems I remember something about Christian girls being slaughtered as well in Indonesia.
BS.
I was just in Malaysia. They have passed all kinds of laws to make Muslims preferred citizens - Bumiputras. This means something like "Son of the soil" in Malay. A Bumiputra is a native Malay and a Muslim.
Malaysia is a unique country. Only about 50% of the population are Malay. The rest are made up of Chinese Malays and Indians.
The native Malays are Muslims and only they can be Bumiputras. They get special preference for jobs. They get disounts on home purchases. Mortgage relief. They get higher returns on bank deposits - all by racist laws designed to promote the interests of the Bumiputra over the "other" Malays.
They have passed laws making it impossible, not only to build a new church, but to even remodel an existing one. Mosques experience no such legal hurdles.
The list goes on - in essence, Malaysia is tolerable for Dhimmis - if you don't mind being a second class citizen, paying more and getting less.

Some of the 9/11 hijackers were friendly smiling taxi drivers.
You are right. I know that two Christian girls were grabbed off the street on there way to school and beheaded. I have the photo of one, but its awe-full graphic.
Dittoes ...
"We have made it. We beat colonialism, we beat nationalism, we beat war, we beat poverty, we beat the Asian crisis ... let's show you around and make money together."
And then, let's stop at the local Catholic school for young girls and cut off their heads!
Oops, looks like I shoulda read the replies ahead of mine first, again :/
You are right that not all Muslims are Arabs, but that does not change the fact that according to their book, they must convert the whole world to their religion. If people do not convert they must be made into second class citizens. There is no seperation of church and state in Islam.
An interesting article about Muslims in Indonesia and Malaysia but I don't know how accurate it is.
Not very accurate. It is propaganda, just what they want you to believe. If you think they don't know how to use propaganda, just check out the product of ther schools where they teach hate, suicide bombing, and second class citizebship for anyone but Muslim males.
BTTT
Arab Muslims view other Muslims as useful idiots.
No way! That would mean that all those emails I got from those moslem Africans are fake? I don't have 35 trillion dollars on the way? Darn!
