Nancy Pelosi is marking her ascension to the Speaker of the House post with a four-day celebration befitting a presidential inauguration.
"This is a big deal,” the California Democrat’s spokesman Brendan Daly declared. "We’ve never had a woman Speaker before.”
The day after New Year’s Day, Pelosi will visit Baltimore’s Little Italy neighborhood, where she grew up as the daughter and sister of Baltimore mayors. She will visit St. Leo the Great Catholic Church and then eat dinner with her extended family at an Italian restaurant, the Washington Post reports.
The next day, Pelosi will attend morning Mass at Trinity University in Washington, her alma mater, and attend a tea in the Andrew W. Mellon Auditorium for about 400 female politicians, supporters and activists. That evening, she will be feted at a dinner at the Italian Embassy, where Tony Bennett will sing "I Left My Heart in San Francisco.”
On day three of her celebration, Pelosi will participate in a service at St. Peter’s Catholic Church on Capitol Hill, then eat brunch with supporters at the Cannon House Office Building and the Library of Congress.
At noon, the House will convene to elect Pelosi Speaker. That night, the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee will hold a fund-raiser where 1,200 partygoers will pay $1,000 each to enjoy a performance by Jimmy Buffett, Carole King and others.
Finally, on January 5, Pelosi will host an "open house” – by invitation only – at the Cannon Office Building.
The festivities are "more than just a party,” according to the Post. "Pelosi is grabbing the moment to present herself as the new face of the Democratic Party and to restore the party’s image as one hospitable to ethnic minorities, families, religion, the working class and women.”
But Republican political consultant Mike Murphy, a former adviser to Mitt Romney and John McCain, said the four-day celebration is "excessive.”
He told the Post: "What? No fireworks? I’m glad they canceled the tickertape parade. They probably couldn’t find biodegradable tickertape and a hybrid convertible.”
I wonder what she will go as? Bella Pelosi perhaps?

This is akin to a New PRIME MINISTER being elected. Pelosi wants to ACT like its an inaguration in order to appear as if she is the legislative prime minister.
It certainly makes Harry Reid look like Nancy Pelosi's bitch.
