NY Official Resigns over Driver Scandal
Yahoo! News ^ | Dec. 22, 2006 | Mark Johnson, AP

The state's chief financial officer, Comptroller Alan Hevesi, resigned Friday and agreed to plead guilty to a felony for using state employees as his wife's chauffeurs.

The plea ends Hevesi's 35-year political career and wraps up an investigation by Albany County District Attorney David Soares, who had been presenting evidence about Hevesi to a grand jury.

Hevesi, a Democrat from New York City, will serve no jail time. He also agreed not to take office on Jan. 1. Hevesi was re-elected in November amid the scandal, and state lawmakers had considered removing him from office.

In court, Hevesi acknowledged that he used state employees to provide services for his wife that "could not be properly characterized as security" during 2005 and 2006.

Hevesi admitted to defrauding the government, a felony that carries a maximum penalty of 1 1/3 to four years in prison. He must submit DNA for the state's databank and is scheduled to be sentenced Feb. 9.

New York Democrats reelected him to office as Comptroller - even though it was a matter of public record that he embezzled public funds to provide his wife a 24 hour chauffeur service at taxpayer expense.

Comptroller !!!

The story here is not that this weasel resigned, it is that NYers voted him back into office last month KNOWING he was crooked. NY - state of confusion.

This man stole $206,000 of taxpayer money and won't serve a day in jail.

One set of rules for the serfs, another for their masters.

Not exactly. He praised Chuckie Schumer for being so strong in his opposition to Bush that Schumer would "put a bullet between the president's eyes if he could get away with it." Hevesi later backtracked from the implications of that statement.

Official Apologizes For Saying Bush Should Be Shot Between Eyes

June 1, 2006

NEW YORK -- State Comptroller Alan Hevesi publicly apologized Thursday for a "beyond dumb" remark about a fellow Democrat putting "a bullet between the president's eyes."

Hevesi called a mea culpa press conference hours after putting his foot in his mouth at the Queens College commencement.

Notice also that he agreed to pay a $5,000 fine (that's a pretty darn low rate of interest on the $200,000+ stolen) and there is not even mention of probation in the article.

I seem to remember Gov Dick Thornberg of Pennsylvania getting caught using state police to give his offspring rides back to school. People shrugged it off. I do not think they prosecuted him at all.

"He must submit DNA for the state's databank."

That's probably a consequence of an overly rigid statute that requires submission of DNA by all convicted felons.

Requiring DNA from violent felons only is the smarter way to go. I don't think there are too many "white collar" crimes such as this where DNA is useful to law enforcement.
