Mike Evans, 57, an actor best known for his role as Lionel Jefferson in the TV sitcoms "All in the Family" and "The Jeffersons," died of throat cancer Dec. 14 at his mother's home in Twentynine Palms, his niece Dr. Chrystal Evans said.
With writing partner Eric Monte, Evans went on to create and write for "Good Times," one of the first TV sitcoms that featured a primarily African American cast.
Michael Jonas Evans was born Nov. 3, 1949, in Salisbury, N.C., to a dentist father, Theodore Evans Sr., and his schoolteacher wife, Annie Sue Evans.
The family moved to Los Angeles when Mike was a child. He graduated from Los Angeles High School and studied acting at Los Angeles City College before landing the role of Lionel Jefferson in Norman Lear's iconic 1970s situation comedy "All in the Family."

I guess he's movin' on up....to the sky...
Throat cancer is suggestive of tobacco use.
To a delux apartment in the sky, you mean! I loved that show...
>>Eric Monte
who later was co-creator of Married with Children
Oh, no. :-( I wondered what had happened to the guy, always enjoyed his work, especially as he outwitted Archie on "All In the Family." Rest in peace, Mr. Evans. Prayers for his family.
It's ok. Fred and 'Lizbeth will be there to welcome him.
Rest in peace, Mr. Evans.
Eric Monte? He wrote the theme song?
RIP Mr. Evans. Prayers for his family. He was so young!
I don't know if he wrote the theme song but I remember seeing a "VH 1 Behind the Scenes" show (or E or some channel like that) talking about Married with Children, and it interviewed
Monte; his co-creator on MWC is Michael Moye I believe.
And so the cycle of celebrities dying in 3's starts yet again.
I loved both of those shows.
I think Jay Jay should have had his own show with the maid from the Jeffersons. Those two -- wow, sparks would fly.
The Jeffersons has been hit hard. Almost all the actors have gone to Heaven on that show. I really liked the character of Lionel on Jeffersons.
RIP Michael Evans. Prayers is his mother.
And so the cycle of celebrities dying in 3's starts yet again.

I believe he based the character of "michael evans" on "Good Times" with some of his personality in mind....I know...no duh
We've already had 3. The creator of Yogi Bear, Raymond's "Dad", a singer from the 1940's/50's (sorry, I forgot her name).
