Europe on High Terror Alert

The threat of a terrorist attack in Europe by Islamic radicals has reached its highest level since the July 2005 transit bombings in London, counterterrorism officials say.

European authorities have disrupted dozens of terrorist attempts since the bombings and have far more suspected radicals under surveillance than at any point since 9/11, The Washington Post reports.

Last week, British Home Secretary John Reid disclosed that an attempted terrorist attack in the U.K. was "highly likely” during the Christmas holiday season.

Also last week, Spanish authorities broke up a cell of Islamic militants who were said to be plotting attacks on an arms depot and a supermarket.

In France, authorities are increasingly wary of an Algerian-based network, the Salafist Group for Preaching and Combat, which recently declared an alliance with al-Qaida, according to the Post.

Officials said this week that they have arrested 76 suspected members of the group in connection with three plots, including one to bomb the Paris subway.

In a new videotape, al-Qaida’s second-ranking leader Ayman al-Zawahiri vowed that the Algerians would soon defeat the "secularist sons of France.”

Zawahiri also singled out Britain on the videotape, saying: "The animosity of Britain toward Islam stretches over centuries.”

hell, if London were hit by a dirty bomb - the media would have to cover that story - for at least 2 or 3 days, you think?

Islamic radicals is a redundant term. Islam is radical.

The Europeans still don't get it -- or if they do, they don't want to face it. Islamofacists are in a war with them and have been for a long time. The war has progressed to the current guerrilla--style campaign using surrogate groups with individual names. The different names are intended to hide the fact that Europe is really faced with one guerrilla army using terrorist tactics. This has the effect of keeping Europe's countermeasures difuse and in the law-enforcement arena only. Europe needs to deal with this militarily.

It's because Britain is friends with America. We (Britain) must sever all ties IMMEDIATELY!! That'll make the terrorists happy!

Oy, does anybody else get the feeling that it's just a matter of time? I mean, at some point one of these plots is gonna fall through the cracks and we'll have another big terrorist strike.

The problem with fighting terrorists is that they do not play by the rules.

They need only be "right" once whereas the good guys are judged on how they handle each case (intervening, prosecution, profiling, etc.).

To terrorists, all targets (civilian, governmental, religious, military, medical, industrial) are in play.

Not excusing any violations of civil rights. However there is no civil right to violent overthrow of the government and mass murder.

The terrorists are war criminals yet they are given justification in their actions (as freedom fighters) by the terrorist friendly media (who've openly said that they would not tip off authorities if they knew of a planned ambush of US "troops", yet the terrorists draw no distinction between targets so in a sense we are all US "troops").

"Who do the Islamics like anyways?"

They kill other muslims, until an infidel becomes available.

One or more of those hate-filled savages is sure to escape detection. There are thousands of bloodthirsty subhumans who wake up in the morning and say "how can I kill infidels?" These things don't care if they get caught or not.
And normal people just let PC get in the way of staying alive.

The problem with fighting terrorists is that they do not play by the rules.

It's the core problem, though i'm sure we all know this.

I think one way of fixing this terrorist problem is to mute out the liberal establishment around the world and then to have all government officals in defense, the DOD, the Cabinet and CIA review our battle tactics against the empire of Japan in WW2.

The biggest problem with Islam is that it is absolute and incremental. There is no way to "satisfy" them. When a country (not naming names here) capitulates and bends over backwards not to offend Muslims and practically apologizes for their perceived offenses against the Islamic world, that is perceived (and quite rightly so) by the Islamic ummah as a victory.

But is it ever enough? No. Now, they will say, now that we've gotten over that little indescretion, let's discuss how you are going to bend your society to our laws. Let's discuss how your capitalism offends us. Let's discuss your foreign policies. Remember, to offend us is to die. Are you ready to submit fully? Or do we need to remind you what happens to resisters? Peace be upon him.

"The Europeans still don't get it.."

They are not the only ones. A similar situation exists in the US. What do you think that the cost is to keep the US secure from Muslim terror attacks and the constant surveillance necessary to keep tabs on the followers of Islam?

We are wasting a lot of money and energy, that could be used elsewhere, just to be on guard against a subgroup in our society.

The question now is: do the "benefits" of having this subgroup as a part of our culture outweigh the menace that this same group poses? What major contribution has Islam made to our society?

Just like the Europeans, we do not get it either.
