4th Outbreak of High-Path Bird Flu in Asan, S. Choong-chung Prov.

(Seoul = Yonhap News) Shin Ho-kyung = It has been confirmed that there was 4th outbreak of highly pathogenic Avian Influenza (AI) in the area of Asan, S. Choong-chung Province.

Ministry of Agriculture & Forestry revealed in the afternoon of Dec. 21, "National Veterinary Research & Quarantine Service (NVRQS) gave a final confirmation that the (poultry) deaths at a duck breeder farm in Tang-jung, Asan, which was (initially) reported on Dec. 11, were indeed from highly pathogenic Avian Influenza."

The farm, 8 km (5 miles) from Pung-seh Creek, a habitat for wild ducks, also had a previous bird flu outbreak in Feb., 2004.

Upon learning of the 4th outbreak, the ministry and S. Choong-chung provincial administration are about to cull 23,000 poultry within 3 km radius of the farm in question, trying to prevent the spread of bird flu, while restricting the movement of poultry, and poultry product such as their eggs within 10 km radius of the farm.

At the same time, the ministry will send an investigation team headed by its assistant secretary and the head of NVRQS, which would oversee the prevention work.

The ministry had already been putting the farm under special watch, after receiving the (initial) report. They destroyed the total of 50,000 duck eggs produced at the farm from Dec. 11 to this day. They also conducted the preliminary test and prevention work on a hatchery at Ansung, Kyung-gi Province, which could have some connection to the farm.

My neighbor quit gardening last year because she was afraid she'd get bird flu. Of course that didn't stop her from buying foreign produce from the grocery store.

Well...the first wave of hysteria brought less than 160 bird flu deaths, worldwide. Um, out of 6 billion people. Why that's astronomical!

And, the drug folks wanted us to fall into utter panic and buy mountainfuls of their concoction. Guess we should all be hysterical about the bird flu again. Wonder what the new scare tactic will be?

Everybody Have Fun Tonight Lyrics

(Wang Chung / Peter Wolf)

I'd drive a million miles
To be with you tonight
So if you're feeling low
Turn up your radio
The words we use are strong
They make reality
But now the music's on
Oh baby dance with me

Rip it up - move down
Rip it up - move it down to the ground
Rip it up - cool down
Rip it up - don't hang it on the borderline

Chorus:
Everybody have fun tonight
Everybody have fun tonight
Everybody Wang Chung tonight
Everybody have fun tonight
Everybody Wang Chung tonight
Everybody have fun

Deep in the world tonight
Our hearts beat safe and sound
I'll hold you so close
Just let yourself go down

Rip it up - move down
Rip it up - move it down to the ground
Rip it up - cool down
Rip it up - get out what's inside of you

Repeat Chorus

On the edge of oblivion
And all the world is Babylon
And all the love and everyone
A ship of fools sailing on

Everybody have fun tonight
Everybody have fun tonight

Across the nation, around the world
Everybody have fun tonight
A celebration so spread the word

Bird flu outbreak spreads in Vietnam's Mekong Delta

Thu Dec 21, 2006 7:00 PM IST

HANOI (Reuters) - Vietnam's first outbreak of bird flu since August has spread to four more areas in the Mekong Delta, where nearly 8,300 birds have been killed by the virus or slaughtered to hold it back, the Agriculture Ministry said.

Three outbreaks spotted between Dec. 11 and Dec. 20 in Ca Mau province killed over 2,500 chickens and ducks, while one in neighbouring Bac Lieu province killed dozens of ducks, the ministry's Animal Health Department said in a report on Thursday.

The outbreaks of the H5N1 virus were the first in Vietnam since August. The initial eruptions killed around 6,000 newly hatched chickens and ducklings that were not vaccinated against bird flu.

Farmers have since thrown dead birds into water channels or let ducks roam on rice fields, helping spread the virus that first arrived in the Delta in late 2003 and has since killed 42 of the 93 people infected in Vietnam.

Vietnam, which has had no human bird flu cases since late 2005, has a human death toll second only to Indonesia's 57, according to the World Health Organisation (WHO).

WHO says bird flu has killed 154 people out of 258 infected globally since late 2003.

Vietnamese animal health officials said on Wednesday that temperatures were falling in the southern region incorporating the delta, which would help the spread of a virus that thrives best in cooler temperatures.

Experts fear the virus could mutate into a form that is easily transmissible among humans and spark an influenza pandemic that would kill millions.

The Mekong Delta outbreaks caused health officials in nearby Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam's largest city, to tighten inspection of poultry and step up monitoring of breeding farms, state media reported on Thursday.

40,000 Marin Schoolkids Get Bird Flu Warning

Jeffrey Schaub
Reporting

(CBS 5) SAN RAFAEL Health officials recently sent 40,000 fliers home with Marin County schoolchildren warning parents to prepare for a possible bird flu pandemic in California.

The avian flu has killed dozens of people in Asia, Eastern Europe, and Africa. Now, concern over the virus has reached Marin County.

The flier sent home with school students warns that if an avian flu pandemic were to hit California, thousands or perhaps millions could become very sick.

"All of us in public health are quite concerned," said Dr. Fred Schwartz, the county's chief health officer. "We may find a situation where 30 to 40 percent of people are becoming infected. That translates to 30 to 40 percent absenteeism at businesses, utilities, schools and the health care sector."

Taking emergency guidelines established by the President himself, Marin is among several Bay Area counties that have begun preparing to distribute avian flu literature to the public, even though there is no immediate threat of a global pandemic.

The fliers sent home with Marin's schoolkids urge families to stock up not on the usual 72 hours of emergency supplies but rather two weeks' supply of food and water, extra prescription drugs, and over-the-counter cold and flu medications.

"The illnesses that we might expect in a pandemic influenza could last for one or two weeks," Schwartz said.

A family of four would need to store 56 gallons of water to last two weeks.

"I would do it," said Marla Fields, of the preparedness plan's call to store two weeks' supply of water. "Just to protect my kids and my husband."

Another parent, Marcus James, added, "I think people need to start thinking about these things because they are going to become a reality at some point."

Nope, It has not killed as many people as muggers in Washington D.C. bag in the average year. It may never make the genetic jump to being a slayer of humans on a broad scale. Still, the planning, preparations, and in some cases, even the medicines (antivirals) all work for most any disaster, be it natural or inflicted.

I have a hard time believing there are households out there which did/do not have three days food and water on hand, but then, I am usually stocked for much longer.

There is nothing to fear if you are ready for most anything.

I never liked songs by artists that included their own names in their songs such as Wang Chung's "Everybody Wang Chung Tonight" and Chaka Khan's "I Feel For You".

Exception: The Who (Who are You)

I agree. It's just annoying when the FDA or any other organization all of a sudden thinks thy have the right to put the fear of God into the public arena...

Same here, pal. Plus, I live on ten acres in the country, and I put out corn and apples for the deer. On any given evening, there about a dozen out front. Also have my own well with a handpump.

So, no worries here. I'll be just dandy.

Actually, a few of us have been tracking this bug for a couple of years, now, through its discovery through human to human transmission in some clusters of cases in SE Asia.

The FDA was a bit behind the curve, as was the WHO (World Health Organization), at least as official pronouncements go.

Other websites have devoted considerable space to information and threads as well.

With multiple threats facing Americans from terrorist, criminal, or biological (natural) activity, not to mention the weather, it pays to have a three-day bug out bag good to go.

One for the house, one for the car, and you are seldom far from what you need to get by long enough to get more.

I think there are deeper connotations to the multifaceted planning which has resuted from the avian flu threat, and most of the official planning and preparations would serve well in the event of either pandemic, natural disaster, or terrorist attack, whether or not avian flu ever becomes the murderous pandemic it could.

With the cut-and-run folks yabbling about redeployments and appeasment, it might be money and time well spent.

Were that truly the case, it would already be done.
