Va.'s Gilmore To Explore Bid For President
The Washington Post ^ | December 20, 2006 | By Michael D. Shear, Washington Post Staff Writer

Former Virginia governor James S. Gilmore III has decided to form a committee to examine running for president in 2008, casting himself as a fiscal conservative with executive experience and national security credentials.

In an interview yesterday, Gilmore said his candidacy would fill a void among Republican presidential hopefuls, who he believes are not dedicated enough to important conservative principles.

"It is my intention to run" for the presidency, he said. "There is no committed conservative in this race who can put together a national campaign. I can do that."

Gilmore, 57, said he plans to form an official exploratory committee next month and will make a "swift decision" about a full campaign in the weeks after.

He is more conservative than other hopefuls, but Jim Gilmore is about as an exciting speaker as watching paint dry.

Did the Gipper form a committee to decide if he should run or not?

Not only is he bland, but he did a lousy job as governor of VA.

I think watching paint dry is more interesting. Gilmore just doesn't have the "Reagan" charisma I would like to see.

OK, can anyone tell me a bit about this guy? What are his positions on, well, anything you think is important? Can he make these beliefs clear and understood? Will he do well as a campaigner? I really want to find a candidate that (a) I support, and (b) can win, and I have to say I'm not that impressed with the present lineup.

He was formerly head of the RNC, but Bush fired him in 2001 after he failed to keep the Republican hold on to the governor's seat in his home state.

He's about as relevant as Mike Gravel.

I am taking the time today to announce that I am forming a committee to look at a run for the White House. And I have as much chance as Gilmore at winning.

I'm aware of Gilmore.

He was once RNC chair as well as VA Gov. He knows his way around the corridors of power. He's been on MTP and other interview shows, just not lately (that I've seen). I don't know what he has to say about specific issue positions and frankly don't particularly want to know. I see him as a Party guy, a behind the scenes operative guy etc., maybe a Governor since he was one, but not anything beyond that.

He is very boring. I don't like him or dislike him. He might think he offers something special, but issue positions ain't gonna cut it when you lack the rest. I'm supporting DUNCAN HUNTER.

This guys is more Happy Gilmore than President Gilmore - PLEASE - this is resume padding - pure and simple..

"I ran for President in 2008" - so I deserve higher speaking fees in 2009.

Gimme a break.

Probably. These "exploratory committees" are just a designation for fundraising.

He was the Speaker at the Republican Party of Iowa's Christmas Party. He had some key Republicans escorting him around the room and introducing activists to him.

He is about as conservative as Wilder, and less interesting to watch.
