Rare Daley move: Endorses Obama for primary
Chicago Sun-Times ^ | 12/20/2006 | Fran Spielman

Posted on 12/20/2006 5:40:07 AM PST by Mike Bates

Mayor Daley has decided to abandon his long-standing tradition of remaining neutral in Democratic primaries and endorse Barack Obama over Hillary Clinton in the 2008 presidential race, City Hall sources said Tuesday.

"Here you have not only an Illinoisan, but a Chicagoan who is a major contender for the highest office in the land. . . . When in our history have we ever had a favorite son this close to [the White House]? Why not get on board early?" said a Daley confidant, who asked to remain unnamed. "Hillary Clinton has been a great senator, a wonderful civic leader. But logic dictates that a Chicago mayor would be behind the Chicagoan who has taken the world by storm. Beyond that, this man has tremendous potential. The world sees that. It stands to reason that the mayor sees it."

Daley's early endorsement will mark the second time in 17 years he has taken such a stand before Democratic primary voters have made their choice.

In January 1998, he endorsed Vice President Al Gore with the presidential vote nearly two years away. Daley's brother Bill Daley, then U.S. Commerce secretary, later became Gore campaign chairman.

This time, the Daley brothers are solidly in Obama's camp.

As Chicago Sun-Times columnist Michael Sneed reported this week, Bill Daley has signed on as a senior adviser to Obama, who is expected to formally enter the presidential race next month.

Sources said the mayor's decision to embrace Obama was made before his brother reserved a seat on the senator's bandwagon. The mayor and Obama have been meeting about the subject for months, huddling for 2½ hours at City Hall as recently as last week.

And there are still folks who contend that Daley is a conservative.

****And there are still folks who contend that Daley is a conservative.****

Nah, not really. I only do that to mockingly compare him to 'St' Rudy.

:-)

When you are black and liberal, good looking picture perfect family, can deliver a speech without saying "you know" the Democrats think they have a winner.

Now his total lack of experience doesnt mean a thing.
His pro-abortion stance is actually helpful.
And to top it off he has a Muslim cultural past.

The democrats have found their Messiah.

Go Hussein.

Yeah, sure.

And nobody from the cemetaries gets to vote, either, eh, Mr. Daley?

Crooked POS.

Oh boy, the games have started. This is going to be a laugh filled primary. You KNOW this has to irk Hillary. What I'd like to know is, how anyone can think that Obama has enough experience to be President. He may be their rising star, but that doesn't give him what we want or need in a President.

"The democrats have found their Messiah."

This has really got to be devastating news to the shrill one. I predict she will be leaving the campaign trail immediately unless this is intended to end up as Obama/Hillary.

Yes, a 'second coming,' I'm sure, . . . along with a general resurrection in all the Chicago cemeteries.

Two things here: First, Daley has nothing to lose here. Obama's his Senator, from his party and will not be running for the presidency. Daley just rides the wave.

Second, it's clear that they want to continue the Oboomlet. I think the reason is that this is a smokescreen for Hillary.

Hillary desparately wants to keep from the kind of retail campaigning you have to do in Iowa and New Hampshire. She wants to campaign on TV. Vilsack has already kept her from having to bother with Iowa and Obama will keep the focus off of Hillary except for her coy claims to not be running.

Hillary is loving this. It keeps scrutiny off of her. Eventually, this will die down or she will kill it by doing something crazy like releasing his radical record as a state Senator or activist.

But what she won't do is play up the amazing coincidence that Obama's election got his wife a huge salary increase (between 100% and 200% IIRC).

I agree .. but it's a dangerous game she is playing
Though in the end, they base will vote for Hellary if they had to no other choice
But the base doesn't like Hellary

BTW .. Hellary is on The View today

Ah, The View. Well, there she will be challenged.

The base will be convinced that Hillary is their only hope. One thing about the Left is that they'll jump through hoops. A lot of them don't like Hillary because they think she's a loser, that's all. If they're stuck with her, they'll fight for her.
