Woman beaten on Jerusalem bus for refusing to move to rear seat By Daphna Berman A woman who reported a vicious attack by an ad-hoc "modesty patrol" on a Jerusalem bus last month is now lining up support for her case and may be included in a petition to the High Court of Justice over the legality of sex-segregated buses. Miriam Shear says she was traveling to pray at the Western Wall in Jerusalem's Old City early on November 24 when a group of ultra-Orthodox (Haredi) men attacked her for refusing to move to the back of the Egged No. 2 bus. She is now in touch with several legal advocacy and women's organizations, and at the same time, waiting for the police to apprehend her attackers.

I once read that the stringencies in religion always tend to the 'man-to-G-d' side. That is that people will say more 'hail Marys' yet not so quickly give charity. Or in this case, the humiliation and physical attack on this woman was all in the name of 'modesty'.
I agree that she was pushing the envelope a bit, but anyone in their right mind and able to prioritize G-d's will would never have attacked her. Especially since it was a totally public bus, but even if it were private and separate, that's no license for violence and abuse.

Almost. There is a sizable minority of NK Jews in the Old City that despises the secular state of Israel and Jews that do not conform to their opinions re: Orthodox beliefs and behaviors.
I had a confrontation once in the Old City when holding my little daughter's hand --- a no-no in their opinion, but necessary b/c she was still in the run-into-traffic age.
But as A. aptly notes, these guys are like the rattle-snake handling Chrisitians or the God-hate-America-because-of-fags Baptist minister.
Now now. Treating women like chattel is only frowned upon when Muslims do it. I would have sworn you received that memo.

Yes, that seems to be true in many instances.
I suppose these people are included among those who dedicate their every waking moment to insuring that they will be 'saved' and obtain favorable treatment in an after-life. As long as their selfishness doesn't harm others, one can tolerate it, I suppose; but when their selfishness motivates them to harm others, a line must be drawn and they must be stopped.
we were our orthodox friend who will push back as hard as they do. My wife did not--trying to ride busses during high holidays is difficult at best--especially trying to leave the Western Wall..

Huh? Jews treat their wives wonderfully. Respectfully, and so on. Treating women like chattel is not the same thing as tacitly agreeing to a set-up where both sexes are seated more modestly and both sexes are more comfortable like that.
This happens to be a bus-run with a very heavily orthodox clientele. (due to the route)
That isn't to say that these zealots were correct in their reaction. Even if it was a private bus, resorting to violence was totally ridiculous.
I've been at weddings that had a tacit separate seating/dancing arrangement and would inevitably have some obnoxious 'Uncle Charlie' sitting on the women's side (in the name of equality of the sexes or what-not)
Eventually the decision is made to gently suggest that his participation is making the women uncomfortable. Then he moves or (usually) doesn't and the majority of women just ingore him.
If they didn't specify otherwise, I'd have thought this was TROP.
