Mystery Surfaces Over Apartment of Kofi Annan
The New York Sun ^ | December 19, 2006 | Claudia Rosett

As Secretary-General Annan prepares to leave his post at the United Nations, a mystery is surfacing surrounding his apartment on Roosevelt Island, subsidized by New York taxpayers, which is still in use by the family of his brother, Kobina Annan.

The apartment was where Mr. Annan and his wife lived before 1997, when he became secretary-general. The Roosevelt Island home is part of an estate of low-rent state-regulated housing. For years, the Annans saved considerable sums by occupying an apartment meant to help financially strapped low- to moderate-income New York families.

One question Mr. Annan has never addressed is why he and his wife felt comfortable availing themselves of this generous arrangement. Another is how it is that, since Mr. Annan and his wife left that Roosevelt Island apartment 10 years ago to move into the rent-free residence on Sutton Place supplied to the secretary-general, their former low-rent apartment was handed over to be occupied by the family of Mr. Annan's brother.

"subsidized by New York taxpayers"

No wonder their taxes are so high.

I partially agree with you. I just thing that this kind of reporting should have gone on WHILE Kofi was Sec-General of the UN.

More corruption by this piece of human garbage.

If serious investigations are held by the UN into the leadership of the UN under this totally incompetent farcical fool are held there is no telling what might turn up. The Oil for Food scam was never fully investigated.

There are at least two such postings which may dilute response to this crime of UN personnel.

How did a foreigner qualify for the apartment in the first instance?

How has the Annan family got away with anything that they have done? From what I can tell it involves bribes or political favors as well as the abuse of diplomatic immunity.

Send him and his brother the bill. 10 years @ $2K a month subsidized = $240K. At 5% interest compounded annually that's a pretty penny. Cough it up Kofi.

"How did a foreigner qualify for the apartment in the first instance?"

The same way foreign college students get heating assistance, food assistance, rental assistance, and welfare, at least that's the way it is at Penn State.

If your child is a Pennsylvania citizen, your lucky to be able to just get him or her accepted; if you are a foreign student (or better yet a minority), well, hell, the sky is the limit as far as handouts are concerned. And the people who want to send their kids to school but can't, get the bill for educating the world's supposed poor (I am told many foreign students usually come from wealthy families).

I'm wondering when this BS gravy train is going to end.
