Woman beaten on Jerusalem bus for refusing to move to rear seat

A woman who reported a vicious attack by an ad-hoc "modesty patrol" on a Jerusalem bus last month is now lining up support for her case and may be included in a petition to the High Court of Justice over the legality of sex-segregated buses. Miriam Shear says she was traveling to pray at the Western Wall in Jerusalem's Old City early on November 24 when a group of ultra-Orthodox (Haredi) men attacked her for refusing to move to the back of the Egged No. 2 bus. She is now in touch with several legal advocacy and women's organizations, and at the same time, waiting for the police to apprehend her attackers. In her first interview since the incident, Shear says that on the bus three weeks ago, she was slapped, kicked, punched and pushed by a group of men who demanded that she sit in the back of the bus with the other women...

If the Haredi want women to sit at the back, they need to buy their own buses. Alternately, they could work out an arrangement with Egged so that buses meant for them were clearly marked as such and didn't allow non Haredi to use them.

Very reasonable.

And you think a local custom that tells women where to sit on a public bus is OK?

Yep.

I'll keep that in mind the next time we see a Muslim Taxi Driver thread.

Christians have all kind of traditions that I find extremely strange, including: vows of chastity, belief in a virgin birth, eating the flesh of their god and drinking his blood. How would you feel if I mocked those traditions?

Mock all you want. Christians aren't defensive about their faith--btw, the flesh and blood stuff is Catholic tradition and not Christian--because we have the truth on our side and aren't swayed by attacks from unbelievers. And we are to consider it a privilege to share in Christ's suffering when we are persecuted for our faith. If you would read the New Testament with an open heart, you would learn the truth.

"...so sue already!...It's a jewish tradition!"

Whilst mocking Jews and killing them is a very ancient Christian tradition.

You people have learned nothing from history.

Lighten up. Allow me to quote from one of my favorite comedians, Jackie Mason, (who is Jewish enough to have been ordained as a rabbi):

"A Jew wakes up every day and says: 'Who can I sue?'"

So based on the great authority of Jackie Mason, whose entire act is devoted to highlighting humorous differences between Jews and non-Jews, sueing is a Jewish tradition.

Apparently, only Jews can make those kind of jokes.

Plus, your use of the word 'sue' is offensive. Please use 'the 's' word' in the future. Thank you.

That seems to be the case. The best solution is to empower the moderns and bring thenm into the 21st century. Let them no men don't go around banging women's head in and dragging them back to the cave.

We are not talking about the US and our laws. We are discussing the laws in Israel amongst the Jewish people. I also recognize the men being attacked are also devoted to a faith in God by the obedience to the law they study. That law includes their separation from any woman other than their wife. I suspect it goes quite a bit deeper than that simple observation. The custom respected their faith. Had the woman felt that deeply about sitting in front, perhaps she could also be as cordial to discuss her perspective rather than forcing her actions upon them, assaulting them both physically, soulishly and intentionally to disrupt their spirituality.

IMHO, she would have been better served to work through legitimate authority rather than assuming she could unilaterally force others into her will. The burden was upon her, not upon them.

Now with respect to their actions, one might assert the same, that they also could appeal to legitimate authority to remove her from her location. I suspect in their faith, they had legitimate authority to remove her, but then the issue becomes one of state vs that flavor of Jewish tradition.

I suspect the Jewish gents wouldn't be as offended to sit elsewhere on the bus provided they weren't forced to intermingle with women. I also don't see anything at all wrong with a foreign body of people, a separate nation from the US, having their own laws which fit their people. I do see errors in even Americans foisting our law on foreigners in their lands.

Lighten up.

Many freepers have been defending Israel and the Jewish people years before you even logged on for the first time, so don't be so quick to accuse "us people" of learning "nothing from history".

And to insinuate that the way most Americans treat Jews is anything close to the way they are treated in Europe is insulting; hopefully you're not stupid enough to really believe that.

You people have learned nothing from history. However much Jews contribute to the United States, many millions of individuals still do not see them as real Americans.

"You people"? Those are typically fightin' words. But being a Zionist Christian, I'm sure they don't apply to me. I've yet to meet anyone who doesn't consider Jews who are American citizens to not be Americans.

"Apparently, only Jews can make those kind of jokes."

Well, yes.

That's why that comedian on Seinfeld converted. (In the show, not Michael Richards --- greatest Seinfeld line ever --- "I'm not offended as a Jew. I'm offended as a comedian.")

So I am not a Christian because I am a Catholic? How odd. If the Body and Blood of Christ are not real food and drink how do you view John 6:55?

I view it as Jesus preaching to the non-believing jews that their forefathers ate manna in the desert and perished, but he, being the son of God, is the bread of life and "eating" what he is offering will lead to eternal life. Notice also, that he's not giving them communion in this passage.

I didn't say you weren't a Christian. But Catholics call themselves Catholics. I am not a Catholic--but I am a Christian because John 6:40 says "For my Father's will is that everyone who looks to the Son and believes in him shall have eternal life, and I will raise him up at the last day." It's not that difficult to understand but lots of people choose to reject Him.

I think you may be confusing modern feminism and its fetishes with the power and rights of women. My impression of traditional Jews is that their women have quite a lot to say.

It's the same mistake people make about American women in the generations before the sexual revolution. Anyone who imagines those women didn't run things--even though they seldom wore pants or held down jobs--probably never met any of them. Believe me, they ran the show in ways modern women could only dream about.

Actually, mocking any distinct foreign or seemingly alien non-integrated group is a part of the human tradition. Everyone does it. We're hardwired to be suspicious of strangers.

Personally, I think Toim Lehrer summed it up the best in his song "National Brotherhood Week":

Oh, the Protestants hate the Catholics,

And the Catholics hate the Protestants,

And the Hindus hate the Moslems,

And everybody hates the Jews.

What is your point, regarding my post about the labeling as stupid (by an Islamic leader in Canada) the actions of a Jewish judge, in regards to her banishing of Christmas trees at a courthouse in Ontario?

And BTW if you support these extremists idiots you are as loony as they are.

It wasn't a comedian, it was his dentist, Tim Watley.

FATHER: Tell me your sins, my son.

JERRY: Well, I should tell you that I'm Jewish.

FATHER: That's no sin.

JERRY: Oh, good. Anyway, I wanted to talk to you about Dr. Whatley. I have a suspicion that he's converted to Judaism just for the jokes!

FATHER: And this offends you as a Jewish person?

JERRY: No, it offends me as a comedian!
And it'll interest you that he's also telling Catholic jokes.
