He was probably the sniper. Long range. He could have been in a tree, etc. in a hostage situation.

The burglars approached the red-brick house on the 2400 block of Hayden Drive in Forest Glen about 9:30 a.m.

Gettin' more and more brazen, aren't they?

"some of these local cops are just a little too impressed with themselves to feel like they need to wear a ghillie suit in the middle of town during a potential standoff."

They do love their toys. It might have been better to have something that looked like a trashcan.

Thank you for a reply that makes some sense to the "outfit" instead of making fun of our LEOs which happens so often on FR.

Some of the leos are worthy of contempt, but not in this case.

There are lots of places in town where gillie suit would be just fine camo. plenty of trees hedges ect in town to fit in with.

Plus most town people would not have a clue.

Indeed. I see tress in that pictures, and now we have confirmation that there's an adjacent wooded area . . . which would be the most likely place for a fleeing burglar to try to hide and thus the most likely place to look for one. Personally, if my job required me to run around the woods trying to find an almost certainly armed criminal, I'd want to look like underbrush too. Make a noise, the criminal quickly turns to look where it's coming from. If he sees something that looks like a police officer, he shoots right at it. If he sees lots of gray/green shrubby looking stuff, he doesn't know quite where to shoot.

Aslo called it to respond was the Takoma Park SWAT Team, famous for their
"HEMP MAN" sniper suit which blends in nicely in the pot infested Hippie Haven community.

I have to admit that it doesn't look like the sort of area that the Ghillie suit would be of much use. That's not to say that there aren't such neighborhoods, but this doesn't look like one of them. If there were overgrown lots or woods behind the houses, then maybe the suite would be useful. Of course shooting from the window of the house next door might be a more useful option.

Police think the incident was a burglary gone awry because the intruders apparently didn't realize the house was occupied.

Why would burglars who think the place is empty wear masks?

It could be more sinister than it seems, but I suspect it's some of the local element doing their "Christmas shopping".

Same thing is going on up here in our small PA. towns. Lots of small banks being hit, as well as the 7-Elevens and small businesses. Home break-ins as well, but usually unoccupied.

I guess the Malls are just too crowded for this kind of Christmas shopper. =:/

The Montgomery County Police were once the most respected in the area -- I hope the clown in the Ghillie suit is a Silver Spring local cop...

I've lived in and around Silver Spring for over 40 years. Monkie County PD is the Silver Spring local cops. Maybe he had some twinkling lights hung on the suit so he could hang out in the front yards disguised as a lawn ornament.

My son and his family live a short drive from there in Silver Springs. We visited over Thanksgiving and drove through that same area. There are a lot of trees and heavily wooded/hilly areas throughout that part of the city. It is hardly urban highrise in that part of Silver Springs. It is a high-rent country estate area. I would guess that there are plenty of dense woods around the house where Domeneci's daughter lives, hence the sniper in a ghillie might make sense.

It's sad to hear that...

I can remember as a teenager and young adult living in the Chevy Chase and Bethesda area - that we knew many of the Montgomery County cops by name - and they knew us and our parents.. Many had grown up in the neighborhoods, returned from the military and joined the force.

We would run into them at the places everyone had breakfast and we would meet and greet like friends and neighbors -- places like Joe's Diner at the corner of University Blvd and Veirs Mill Road in Wheaton - across the street from the Ford Dealership whose name I've forgotten..

Now here's the kicker -- the FIRST call we would make if we "had a problem" was the County Cop -- not home. If we had car trouble - not wanting to drive after drinking - trouble in a bar, etc...we'd call them for help -- and they would come. There was a close link and respect between the Montgomery County police and the citizens at that time.

Of course I'm talking about the late 50's and early 60's and the population was a fraction of what it must be today.

So I was doubly shocked to hear that an idiot like Chief Moose had been brought in to lead what was once one of the most professional and respected Police Forces in the country.

Shocking how far things have fallen.
Several of the San Jose, CA Police I've met out here are "okay", but most wouldn't amount to a pimple on the ass of those old Montgomery County Cops....

It was Hill and Sanders Ford back then. It's still a Ford store but with new owners and a new name, which I don't recall. But the Diner is still there, going strong.
