Leonid Brezhnev, Aleksei Kosygin, Nikolay V. Podgorny, Aleksandr Shelepin and the KGB chief Semichastny ousted Russia's former dictator, Nikita Khrushchev, in a coup in 1964.

Four years later in 1968, the Soviet invasion of Czechoslovakia takes place.

On Christmas Day 1979 Brezhnev orders a full scale Soviet invasion of Afghanistan. Jimmy Carter could not believe his 'friend' Brezhnev lied to him.

“The Brezhnev Doctrine was a Soviet policy doctrine, introduced by Leonid Brezhnev in 1968, which stated:

"When forces that are hostile to socialism and try to turn the development of some socialist country towards capitalism, it becomes not only a problem of the country concerned, but a common problem and concern of all socialist countries."

Leonid Brezhnev was succeeded by another Communist hardliner, Yuri Andropov, the former head of the secret police, the KGB, which is the same elongated secretive background Putin was hatched. In fact Putin's old boss in the KGB was none other than Yuri Andropov.

It's alarming numbers of today's Russians long for 'the good old days' under the Brezhnev era, and even the beast like brutality of Stalin.

And everyone remembers the fawning press over Andropov too, right? How "Westernized" he was and how the West would be able to work with somebody like him?

Thank God he croaked after a short time.

So many Russians like the Soviet times because it is all they ever knew! They had shelter, they had practically free vodka and some nasty food but by God they were powerful; they had nukes! And some, SOME even had toilet paper!!

Well, time for some old jokes at his expense. Let us start small:
Once there was a knock on his door. Blevonid* Ilyich came to the door, put his eyeglasses on, pulled out a piece of paper from his breast pocket, and read: "Who's there?".
*- a pun playing on Ukrainian version of his given name - levonid. With the addition of "b" in front it becomes a derivation of the root "blevat'" = to puke.

While inspecting a zoo, Blevonid Ilyich was swallowed by a crocodile. The poor beast crapped medals for two months afterwards.

It has been known for a long time that he wore even the medals awarded to his dog.

"...Dear Leonid Ilyich, as Brezhnev was known, is still remembered for the unprecedented stability that allowed ordinary people to plan out their lives."

I think this, more than anything else, is want the Russian people feel nostalgic for.

Isn't this a position that the UN takes? And the Democrat Party and the MSM?

Leonid Brezhnev now looks good to Russians because the country was at its height as a superpower and most people had a good life by Soviet standards. Of course it wasn't good for the people who opposed the Soviet State. What is overlooked is the Brezhnev Era was marked by serious corruption and the inability of Soviet leaders to avoid overextending their own country vis a vis America. Brezhnev's policies helped to create the conditions for the Soviet Union's eventual downfall. So the nostalgia for those 18 years is misplaced in Russia.
