Mazda is planning to launch a diesel version of the Mazda 3 in February. The car is likely to be badged D Sport and will have a 143 horsepower engine with a top speed of 130 mph. The new Mazda 3 Diesel will give Mazda the chance to compete with cars such as the Ford Focus and Peugeot 307 which already come in diesel varients. The car is expected to do 0-60 in 8.5 seconds and is expected to achieve 55mpg.

That's a far cry from an old MBz we used to have. 0-60 took about a minute and 15 seconds, top speed was 70, and it got 40 mpg. The plume from the tailpipe pre-empted tailgating.

It would surprise you what it could out-handle in the twisties, though.

I really like the Mazda 3 - amazing how good front-wheel drive cars are to drive now. But I'll take mine with a regular engine - in Mazdaspeed form.

Wait, why would Mazda want to compete with Ford when Mazda is owned by Ford?

lol....I had an old 300D that I drove until the sunroof leaked and rusted the thing beyond repair. The car had about 350,000 miles on it when I retired it. I'm sure that engine is still running somewhere though.

Funny story, one time we were at the beach and I had a few too many beers to drive home. My roommate at the time (Mustang 5.0 driver) offered to drive and insisted that the parking brake was on as he tried to accelerate.

Why does diesel cost more than gas?

"Why does diesel cost more than gas?"

Never used to! I believe it's because in this country, there is still a dearth of diesels on the road. The refineries are producing more gasoline than diesel. If there was more diesel the cost of gas would be higher.

Not sure exactly. Maybe there is less diesel in a barrel of oil than gasoline. You cannot make more diesel by making less gasoline. The qtys are fixed........

Ford Focus already builds a Diesel?

Now waitaminute. I thought the Mazda 3 was the same as a Ford Focus, just with a different badge on the hood.

Am I missing something here?

Looks like a good "student" car. Now turn it into a mini-van or station wagon and hang on to say 45 mpg and you would have a real winner.

My uncle used to be in the fuel industry, and told me the price jump happened because of the Russian mob. They were selling one type of diesel as another. They got caught, and the regulations came raining down.

I know nothing of the subject, just going by what he told me.
