What will they do about entitlements?
Most readers will have heard the standard analysis that "Only Nixon could go to China."
Yes, Richard Nixon became the first president to visit Red China -- and meet with the infamous Mao Zedong -- in February 1972. The presidential visit was the first step in normalizing relations between the two giant countries.
But why "Only Nixon"?
The saying refers to an oddity of America's closely divided partisan politics. Because Democrats at the time were widely branded -- not always without cause -- soft on communism, any Democratic leader who'd tried to cozy up to the Chinese mass murderer and dictator-for-life would have had his political head handed to him on a platter. But because the peacemaker was Nixon, known for decades as a staunch anti-communist, criticism from the right was sharply muted.

It all depends upon which lobbyist provides the most cash.
C'mon. Are there any prominent senators from Nevada who were involed with mobsters in a shady land deal?

I don't know. I'm trying to think of a name, but it just won't come to me. I just can't seem to get a reid on it.
Strong environmental protection is normally associated with the Democratic Party yet two of the Nation's most influential environmental laws (NEPA and ESA) were passed under the Nixon Administration. I think to assume the Democrats will actually do anything that changes the status quo is simply wishful thinking. The modern Democratic Party is not known to rock the boat of power when they are at the tiller.
But today's activists only know what the media tells them: Democrats are stewards of the environment, and care about people, and Republicans only care about money.
Will Democrats rise to the challenge?
They haven't in the last hundred years.
It all depends on how much Viagra they have on hand.

Raise taxes repeatedly and pass new entitlements.
Indeed. The newspapers write for those with a six-grade education and the news media speaks to those who can not read. Having worked in enviromental issues for the past two decades, I am a Republican primarily because they have always been the real stewarts of the environment.
