Only problem is the best GOP candidate for the seat IS the Governor.He's probably not precluded from appointing himself, assuming he wanted the job. Then they'd probably have to have a special election to replace him as governor.

A Governor cannot "appoint himself" as a replacement Senator. He can, however, strike a deal with the Lt. Governor that the Lt. Gov. will appoint the former Gov., once the Gov, has resigned. It's been done that way before.
