A violent solar explosion sent a dangerous wave of radiation through space late Tuesday, prompting NASA to order the crews of Discovery and the International Space Station to take shelter overnight, according to Local 6 News partner Florida Today.
The solar flare erupted around 9:40 p.m., unleashing enough radiation to disrupt radio communications on Earth and in orbit while endangering astronauts circling 220 miles above the planet.

Our puny nukes are nothing compared to the awesome power of the sun.
THIS is why we need a backup plan to our reliance on electronic technology. For example, a stockpile of hand-operated gas and diesel pumps, "pure" diesel engines, a healthy reserve of horses and other ancient work animals...
The nuclear EMP danger is a maybe/maybe not thing. But the sun has already shown us what it is capable of doing on several occassions.

Yeah, pretty scary stuff. I've been tuning into the NASA channel since the launch to keep tabs on the ISS mission. I had heard they were placed there preemptively for this reason. I hope its enough, I have no idea the kind of rads they're getting up there mostly unshielded. Such sacrifices they make for science.

Help me out here. Where exactly did they "take shelter." Are there motels in outer space?

Help me out here. Where exactly did they "take shelter." Are there motels in outer space? Nah, certain portions of the station simply were created to provide better protection again radiation.

I know how that works. I have a special hamster wheel attachment for my computer. ;-) But seriously I agree with you and I've actually seen people start to cry and go into "panic attacks" when the electricity goes off for too long.

My son is studying this very thing in science right now! And I mean, right now! LOL! I told him to put down his lesson and come read this article! He can always return to his studies, but this is real life!
Thanks!

Anyone have any idea how they determine how long the astronauts need to be sheltered?
