Nissan to launch new diesel engine cars

Nissan Motor says it will release vehicles equipped with new, environment-friendly diesel engines, in the Japanese, North American and Chinese markets in 2010.

Nissan Motor Co said on Monday it will release vehicles equipped with new, environment-friendly diesel engines, in the Japanese, North American and Chinese markets in fiscal 2010.

The release of the new vehicles will be part of the Nissan Green Program 2010, a medium-term environmental action plan, that also includes a project to launch a gasoline-electric hybrid car, based on Nissan's own technologies, in fiscal 2010 for the Japanese and North American markets, the automaker said.

With the NGP 2010 aimed at reducing carbon dioxide emissions as one of its features, Nissan will develop some of new diesel engine vehicles jointly with Renault S.A. of France, which has a 44 per cent stake in the second largest Japanese automaker.

While diesel engine vehicles tend to be shunned in Japan for their noise and lack of power, Nissan is "confident" that the market for them will grow because of technological advances being made on them, Nissan Chief Operating Officer Toshiyuki Shiga said at a press conference.

Prior to the release of new diesel engine vehicles in the Japanese, North American and Chinese markets, Nissan will introduce vehicles equipped with new diesel engines in Europe in the first half of fiscal 2007.

Nissan, which has lagged behind Toyota Motor Corp and Honda Motor Co in the development of hybrid technologies, will introduce its first hybrid car in the US market in 2007, though utilising a hybrid system from Toyota.

In addition to the development of Nissan's original hybrid technology, the NGP 2010 envisages the carmaker selling a gas-fueled car that will run 100 kilometres on three litres of fuel, starting from Japan in fiscal 2010.

Believing that vehicles using electric motors will become more important in the future in an attempt to reduce CO2 emissions, Nissan said it will launch the next-generation fuel cell vehicle early in the next decade.

The Tokyo-based automaker said it is preparing to establish a new company to develop, produce and market advanced lithium-ion batteries.

Nissan has worked out the NGP 2010 against the backdrop of the United States and Europe planning to adopt new rules designed to sharply reduce CO2 emissions by fiscal 2010. In addition, Japan is expected to toughen its clean-air regulations in 2009.

On new technologies to meet stricter environmental rules in the world, Carlos Ghosn, who heads Nissan and Renault, told Kyodo News in October that the two automakers are "not pushing one technology, contrary to some of our competitors".

Instead of pursuing such technology as hybrid solely, Ghosn said Nissan is exploring a wide range of options in marketing new models, including those equipped with improved diesel engines, bio-ethanol engines, or fuel cells.

He said each regional market may go in a different direction as there are differences in environmental regulations, energy dependence and consumer needs.

It's about time. My 25 year diesel old VW Rabbit pickup gets 50mpg on the highway, putting expensive hybrids to shame. And if you don't feel like sponsoring terrorists fill it up with 100% biodiesel.

Honda will have their diesel out in a year or two as well.

Diese engines have a thermal efficiency of about 42%.
Properly designed methanol engines have a thermal efficiency of about 43%.
Gas engines ha\ve a thermal efficiency of abot 30%. Gas is the LEAST efficient.

My 1984 Mercedes-Benz 300D Turbo Diesel (that I purchased for $100) is still running fine 2 years later.

Using ceramics and other new materials, the diesels can probably go over 50% fairly soon. The industry has put all its research into gasoline technology and left the diesel engine pretty much the red-headed step child for decades. Now, it's time has come to shine!..........

One of my old employers, back in the late-80s, used to swear by those cars. He'd religiously change the oil and filters every 2500 or 3000 miles, and other than that, brakes and tires every now and then, was about it. He'd pick them up used from folks who would only drive a new car for 2 years, then sell/trade for the latest model.

Time for BMW to add a boxer diesel (R) or K engine diesel to its lineup of motorbikes.

I live in Israel; I drive an Italian Alfa Romeo 159 sedan with a turbodiesel engine that drives like a bat out of hell -- it goes 0 to 100kph like nobody's business and is easily the most overpowered car I have ever owned.

It's well made, drives beautifully, isn't expensive (about US $30,000), and gets 46 miles per gallon. To be totally honest, I don't see why anybody would want to buy a gasoline powered car.

About 25 mpg, but with some work I think 35 would be possible.

If only Nissan were a more ethical company, it could be tempting.

I had one of those. An '81 model. Excellent gas mileage, but it wouldn't pull a greasy string out of a cat's arse.....

More ethical than whom?

They've been trying to steal the Internet domain name nissan.com from a small businessman named Uzi Nissan for years. They couldn't get a domain name arbitration on the merits in their favor since his ownership was legit (no domain squatting -- that's his name and the name of his business), so they've been dragging him through the courts with high-powered lawyers trying to get the domain.
