Prominent conservatives are upset after reviewing a 1994 letter signed by Mitt Romney when he ran for the U.S. Senate in Massachusetts against Sen. Ted Kennedy.
In the 1994 letter addressed to the Log Cabin Republicans, a gay Republican group, Romney strongly argued for gay rights.
"We must make equality for gays and lesbians a mainstream concern, Romney wrote, adding that he would be more aggressive than Senator Kennedy in pushing for gay rights.
In recent months, Romney has been garnering significant support for his White House bid among grass roots conservatives. Romney has gained points among social conservatives for his ardent opposition to Massachusetts legalization of gay marriage.
The New York Times reported Saturday that the Family Research Council, among others, expressed disappointment with the contents of the Romney letter.
"This is quite disturbing, said Tony Perkins, president of the Family Research Council. "This type of information is going to create a lot of problems for Governor Romney. He is going to have a hard time overcoming this.
Paul Weyrich, head of the Free Congress Foundation, tells the Times that Romney may be cornered.
"Unless he comes out with an abject repudiation of this, I think it makes him out to be a hypocrite, Weyrich said. "And if he totally repudiates this, you have to ask, on what grounds?
Some conservatives are also worried that Romney, as president, might back changes in military rules barring openly gay people from serving.
In his 1994 letter Romney said he backed Bill Clintons "dont ask, dont tell policy and wrote that it was "the first in a number of steps that will ultimately lead to gays and lesbians being able to serve openly and honestly in our nations military.
Romneys spokesman told the Times that Romney in recent years has not advocated any change in military policies and that while Gov. Romney opposes same sex marriages, he strongly opposes discrimination against any group, including gays and lesbians.
"Governor Romney believes Americans should be respectful of all people, Eric Fehrnstrom, Romneys spokesman, told the Times. "However, over the past four years as governor, Mitt Romney has not advocated or supported any change in the militarys policies and he has not implemented new or special rights in this area.
He added that Governor Romney had been "a champion of traditional marriage and "fought the efforts of activist judges who seek to redefine marriage.
Let's just kill all the Republicans.
Romney is a fraud.
Wow, a politician pandering to get elected. Slap me!
PING!
It's not just gay rights. Romney's goes from 100% pro abortion to 100% pro life depending on the election cycle. I don't know if it's something in the water in Massachusetts that makes their politicians into the biggest flip floppers around.
Enough of the liberals the MSM wants us to have for president candidate. Cripes!
Why do conservatives let the damn MSM drive our candidate choices. Go look at a Rudy thread how all those false conservatives fawn over rudy. Idiots! Geez.
It's the fluoridation. :-)
Help me out here, did't Ronald Reagan "change his mind" about a few things along the way?
Pinging the resident FRomneyite.
Well, you are quite familiar with frauds, aren't you?
Yeah, I know you, and you claim to be a conservative.
What are Mitt's core values?
You know exactly who I meant, but nice try.
Don't you realize that you being against Romney is a PLUS for him, based on your track record?
Give Willard a Break!
