Hillary Clinton wouldn't let Chelsea have one (no, not a mirror). And hundreds of thousands of feminists constantly speak out against Barbie. (I had several as a kid--"Superstar Barbie" was my favorite.)
It's no big deal to them that there are far worse dolls, like Bratz. And that one toy company recently scrapped plans to make stripper dolls aimed at six-year-olds. They're dead set against Barbie, mostly because Barbie is thin (and also because she's feminine).
It's not like Barbie (full name: Barbara Millicent Roberts) made anyone anorexic. Has the thin Barbie has made a dent in the ever-increasing obese population of American women? Hardly.
Barbie And Friends: A Girl's Dream Toys
Despite all the opposition and villification of Barbie, the doll is the TOP TOY for girls, this holiday season, according to the National REtail Federation (TMX Elmo is tops for boys). Sales of Barbie have been up, this year, for the first time in several years. I think it's a backlash against feminism and the butchification/masculinization of women, and Mattel's abandonment of silly Barbie-broke-up-with-Ken-and-is-an-independent-woman stories. (If only Mattel could get the hint and stop turning Ken into a girlie-man.)
Sales of the Rosie O'Donnell doll--not doing too well. The Hillary doll. Ditto.
And BTW, for our readers who may need some lessons in holiday shopping tips for kids, here are a couple of hints:
These are for GIRLS (NOT boys) . . .
(I got both of these for Channukah as a kid and enjoyed them.)
These are for BOYS (NOT girls) . . .
I hate these liberals and feminazis who insist on giving their boys effeminate gifts and their girls masculine ones. Way to mess up your kid.
I despise BRATZ and will not allow our daughter to have anything associated with them, but I disagree with you about that fad fading. At least it doesn't appear to be fading in any of the stores I've been in lately.
But Barbie still reigns, however there are far too many of them - my poor husband went nuts looking for a new one for our 8 year old :)
I wish I could take the credit, but I found it somewhere. :-)
Of course I wouldn't (giggle). If it makes you feel any better, Ken lost his arm in an unfortunate Barbie learjet accident. (Hence the need for the before mentioned services of G.I. Joe).
Not if you have a sword, which Xena does.
You were nicer than me. I hanged them on a popsicle stick gallows, complete with trap door and lever.
LOL!
Skipper lost her to my dog. To this day I can't believe the dog didn't need to go to the vet after that.
Well, it all depends on what you want GI Joe for. If you want to stuff and mount him, a sword is fine. If you want him to, um, do the opposite to you, better feed him first.
I don't remember worrying about body measurement equivalence, or comparing my body to Barbies when I was a little girl. I just liked all the different clothes Barbie had. The best thing about Barbie was learning how to color coordinate and discover my own taste in clothing.
Feminists are putting way too much adult psychology into a girl playing with dolls.
Feminists can not change nature or genetics. No matter how hard they try or how smart they think they are.
BTW, that is SO sad, to have to have a baby and mommy truck, her father seems thoughtless and selfish.
Oh my!
Joe ain't got time for that kissy stuff. There's bad guys that need blowin' up. Buildings to be thrown over. Kites to be tied to. Guy stuff. See post #21.
ROTLMAO!!!
They look like an "alternative lifestyle" family with severe thyroid eyes.
I played with Barbie AND GI Joe as a little girl, and I turned out just fine (ie, heterosexual). I created psychodramas for them in which GI Joe (NOT Ken) always wound up with Barbie-I think every little girl that had a GI Joe doll played with him that way. And he was a REAL (12" tall) GI Joe, too : One of the originals, not the 3" retro revivals that was popular in the early 1990s.
