Latino population booms in New Orleans
The Baton Rouge Post ^ | 11th December, 2006 | UPI Staff

Posted on 12/11/2006 7:20:50 PM PST by mcg2000

A little more than a year after Hurricane Katrina, New Orleans is seeing a boom in its Latino population, with many coming to help reconstruct the city.

Health officials had not anticipated the surge in the city's Latino population, The New York Times reported.

In a demographic twist, hundreds of Latino babies are being born in New Orleans to immigrant Latino workers, both legal and illegal. In a city largely abandoned by its doctors after the storm, this new population adds a financial strain to the already struggling city.

Many expectant mothers, lacking in financial assistance, cannot afford prenatal care and often forgo it, the newspaper said, and go to the hospital only when they are ready to deliver. At Tulane-Lakeside Hospital, doctors report delivering 215 to 240 babies a month.

One New Orleans obstetrician, Dr. Kevin Work, focuses almost entirely on Latino women -- something he decided to do after seeing the enormous influx of expectant Latino mothers into the city after Katrina.

"Those areas won't ever be the very same again. "

My point exactly.

It's the Hispanics that are rebuilding New Orleans.

Yes, and while they are at it a couple of the guys on the crew slip off down the street and steal anything they can get their hands on. This has been mentioned on the local news several times. They are also keeping themselves entertained with drugs and prostitues. There has also been at least one rape and murder by a hispanic worker; but, he migrated here from Kansas City. Go figure.

It's the Hispanics that are rebuilding New Orleans. They want the work, unlike the previous residents that can't be persuaded to return and help rebuild. Work? That's a 4 letter word!

...but you have to hand it to the Hispanics, many illegal, they are doing the work NOLA escapees refuse to do.

BULLS**T!!!

The locals (Americans) got undercut by the low wage illegals!!! Below are a couple of links to an May 2006 FR thread on New Orleans changing with all the illegals moving there. Buried in this pro-illegal puff piece are facts that Americans have to compete with illegals for jobs in their own country and are losing their jobs due to greedy contractors and low wage illegals.

The first link is my response to some open-borders troll (who's response was removed by the moderator) who thought basically like you do that the illegals are "just doing the Jobs Americans won't do", without even reading the entire thread.

The next link is to the article itself.

Here is one more really good link you will really like to see. It details how 70 AMERICANS laborers, many who lost their jobs due to Katrina, hired to help in the cleanup, were fired after a couple of weeks and replaced with illegals. They were told to split by their bosses who told them, "the Mexicans had arrived".

GO TELL THESE AMERICANS THEY ARE TOO LAZY TO DO THE JOBS THE ILLEGALS ARE DOING. You'll be lucky to get out of that situation alive!!!

Yeah, it's become a common thing for me to associate this bed-
wetting liar with the whole situation in new orleans. If I knew how to post pics, I'd post one of him under many of the "poor New Orleans" posts. (Not that the people who post them think that...)

You're absolutley right....I remember reading about this when it happened.

I certainly hope, that these Americans who are losing their jobs to illegals are reporting and filing RICO claims against the employers of the illegals.

Latino population booms in New Orleans

I wonder if that will be "chocolate" enough for mayor Nagin.

Thank you for your post. I've seen news stories of AMERICANS who tried to go back to NO to work. They had to sleep in their cars, were told no, because employers got cheaper illegal help, could not take their families, there was no housing for families and no schools to send the kids. Some make it sound like it was SO easy. It wasn't.

Ironic. New Orleans will soon look more like Mexico City rather than the Chocolate City.

Your Welcome!!! I too have seen the stories. It is a real crying shame when you have more than enough Americans willing to do the work, but are undercut by greedy contractors hiring low wage illegals. It is a sad state of affairs in our country when crap like that is allowed to happen.

It didn't help things for the locals (Americans) when President Bush signed the executive orders waiving the rules on federal disaster cleanup/rebuilding contractors no longer having to pay the prevailing wage for the area and also waived the rules that required federal contractors to ensure their employees had proper documentation (i.e. green card, social security card, etc.) to prove their "employees" are here legally.

It is also pretty sad when you see many ignorant posters on this thread. Stating the same old tired cliche's about the locals being too lazy to work, illegals just doing the jobs the locals won't do, etc. These posters do not know what they are talking about.

Have you noticed they are the same posters who call anyone from the South a KKK'er and anyone from the west a redneck and anyone who disagrees with Bush on anything is a 1%er!

They must have turned the tv off during Katrina! And yes this illegal alien mess in NO is because of Bush doing away with prevailing wage. THAT was an invitation.
