TEL AVIV Israel's military is bracing for a possible two-front war in the summer of 2007.
Officials said the General Staff has received intelligence assessments that Israel could be attacked from both Lebanon and Syria in the north as well as the Palestinian Authority in the south during the summer of 2007. They said the military concluded that Hizbullah and the PA would coordinate missile strikes against Israel. "The last war [against Hizbullah in July 2006] caught both Hizbullah and the Palestinians by surprise," an official said. "Now both sides are in full coordination and when war erupts the missiles will fly from both fronts."
On Sunday, the head of the research division of Military Intelligence, Brig. Gen. Yossi Baidatz, said Syria was preparing for war with Israel. Baidatz said Syrian President Bashar Assad ordered accelerated production of medium-range Scud C and D missiles, which could strike virtually anywhere in the Jewish state.
Baidatz also told the Cabinet that Assad ordered the Syrian Army to deploy anti-tank missile units along the Golan Heights near the border with Israel. At the same time, Assad ordered the withdrawal of Syrian forces from other fronts.
"He is preparing the Syrian Army for the possibility of a military conflict with Israel," Baidatz said. "On the other hand, he is not ruling out the possibility of reaching a political settlement with Israel."
Officials said Iran has helped Hizbullah and Syria prepare for another war against Israel. They said Iran has replenished Hizbullah's rocket and missile arsenal as well as increased financing to Hamas and Islamic Jihad in the PA areas. "The deeper the connection among Hizbullah, Syria, Iran and Hamas, the more we need to worry," Chief of Staff Maj. Gen. Moshe Kaplinsky said on Dec. 8.
Kaplinsky said Iran was also preparing to achieve nuclear weapons capability in early 2007. He said Teheran would master the nuclear cycle, or produce enriched uranium without significant foreign help.
A senior military source said Northern Command has led efforts to prepare for a war against Hizbullah and Syria by mid-2007. The source said reserve units have conducted live-fire exercises since October 2006, with plans for a division-level exercise in early 2007.
"There is no information that somebody is going to attack us in the summer," Deputy Defense Minister Ephraim Sneh said on Monday. "But we are building our force in accordance with capabilities and not intentions. Things could change overnight."
Hey Israel, you have only Olbert to blame.

The Lebananese debacle does not bode well for just "doing it". (sadly)
Nice story, but I wouldn't care to place any bets on the real thing following Krafts dramatic timeline and plot. Might make for a good movie or a 24 episode.
I do understand his point tho, and it's one that many others have made in the past 20 years or so. Thanks for the link.
The part that he missed is where the Pres declares martial law to deal with it, which results in the 2nd American Civil War and the subsequent dividing up of the US among our opponents.
Prediction is very dangerous, especially if it concerns the future.
The global chessboard is in a very ominous configuration. It is reminiscent of the sky during a bad day in "tornado season" -- the clouds are dark, unstable, moving in different directions... the air is hot, and still, waiting for that awful moment when a small gust in the right direction begins a cascade that ends in major catastrophe.
If, IF this goes down, then I would expect there would also be some coordination with Al-Qaeda in Iraq, Iran and Afganistan and possibly even N. Korea as well as general terrorist activities around the world, to keep the U.S. and NATO too busy to help out Israel. This scenario could get very ugly, very fast. If Israel feels sufficiently threatened they could easily go nuclear and then all bets are off. Syria and Hezbolla/Hamas might feel that they could handle Israel if the Allies are out of the picture.Keep in mind that Ahmadinejad has been making some very interesting trips lately, Venezuela, DPRK, etc.
I hope our guys are paying attention.
The closest parallel I can think of is the timeframe leading up to WWI. Tension everywhere, but things held tight -- until Gavrilo Princip tossed a bullet into the air, and then the cascade began -- quickly.
Of course, there's an obvious WWII parallel too. Picture the Third Reich with unimaginable oil wealth and modern munitions the likes of which couldn't even be dreamed of in the 1930s.
Meanwhile, the dollar hangs by its fingernails over the abyss, with the only question seeming to be which adversary will be the one to apply the boot-heel to them. China? Iran? Venezeula? Our Saudi "friends"? Perhaps they'll have a cointoss to decide.
And our gigantic sieve -- the one with the sign labeled "border, please do not cross" -- provides an ongoing vector for additional unimaginable horrors.
But, most of us are too wrapped up in celebrity gossip, Missing White Folks du jour, Pop Crime, porn, dope, booze... crack open your Old Testament and see if you can find any parallels. Santayana nailed it dead to rights regarding history, and those who can't be bothered to learn from it. And we are far beyond that -- we can't even be bothered to learn from the present. Our "leaders" are a pack of wallet-sniffing morons, who find their own ignorance amusing.

I know how you feel. I feel the same way about my septic tank when it acts up.
But still, it serves an important, necessary function.
Without it, I'd have sewage seeping all over the place. And without France, we'd have the French all over the place.
Don, I think we both know that intelligence has never been a requirement for public office. Popularity ( the head cheerleader variety )is the predominant factor for getting elected, and is what politicians excel at and what they groom themselves for. If intelligence were a important factor we'd be governed by Mensa members. I once had a boss who had no problem with admitting he wasn't the smartest guy in the company, because as he said; "I can hire brains". He was very popular tho.
