You are way full of it...must have fallen victim to the KGB leftie professors...or you are one yourself.
Get that thinking cap on!
Pinochet is a hero to all freedom loving people.
Hermógenes Pérez de Arce, a brilliant mind and a staunch Pinochet supporter, has a website worth looking at: http://www.policyofliberty.net/HPdA/english.html
Those crying over Pinochets alleged apathy towards human rights abuses and disregard for the rule of law would do well to remember that he, like the Junta in Argentina, was engaged in a war in the 1970s, which pitted them against some of the greatest purveyors of inhumanity and destruction that the South American continent has ever seen.
The threat that these marxist guerillas presented cannot be underestimated. They were motivated, well financed, well supplied, and had plenty of advisors and outside help coming in from Cuba and the USSR.
Look at Argentina for instance, where the communist Monteneros kidnapped and executed Pedro Aremburu, a former president of the republic for pete's sake. It was war in the streets, and if you will permit the cliché -desperate times demand drastic measures.
Had it not been for the military governments of Chile, Argentina, Brazil, Ecuador, etc., US support, and institutions like the School of the Americas, who knows what the world would look like today!?!
I suppose those criticizing simply would have advocated a more "nuanced approach," ala John Kerry and the apologists and enablers of today. Some things never change
