Virtually, every single communist country has killed it's own citizens and committed human rights violations in the name of government will.
In fact, the worst mass murders in the whole history of human beings were committed by country's with communist regimes. Millions of people died under the communist regime of USSR, Red China, Cambodia, and North Korea.
I think the real question is how many more people would have died under Argentina's communist regime as opposed to those who died under Pinochet's?
If the man who saved Chile from Hell on Earth deserves to go to Hell, then where does that leave you?
Disgusting comment, sir. May this hero to the Chilean people rest in peace.
He has had many years to get right with God. Who can say he Didn't?
"I reacted to all the claims [of torture], principally from the [Catholic] Church. The officials responsible for inhumane treatment of the enemy were punished immediately and severely. I also dissolved the political police [DINA] when reports came my way about their methods.... Often I stepped in too late; each harmful incident could not be avoided in time," Pinochet confesses from his residence near London, where he remains under arrest.
Even the General himself admits bad things happened. That doesn't mean he was wrong or right. I started reading the comments here thinking he was a horrible man, but now I am leaning toward him being a man who meant well, but occasionally lost control of situation.
I hope he saves a seat at the bar in hell for Mr. Hussein, who soon will be joining him.
ping
I hope it was all worth it for him.
To quote a very prominent Republican Governor of California,
"Hasta la vista, baby"
Gen. Augusto Pinochet Ugarte, at the behest of his government and the wishes of the Chilean people, came out of retirement to stop Salvador Allende's coommunist takeover and killed those who support him. To this day, the Chilean people talked proudly of the day Pinochet overthrew Allende. even the Marxists of his time commented that Pinochet saved Chile. After 26 years, he willingly stepped down and allowed Chile to become a democratic country.
He was doing what he thought was right. But even all of that will not save him if the Lord deems him unworthy. His soul is in God's hand now.
I'm grateful for what he did on behalf of the free world. But I can not say where he is now. If he is to be in heaven ofr hell, so be it. The Lord decides and I shall not be so arrogant as to disagree with Him.
RIP
Pinochet restored political freedom and brought prosperity to the Chilean people by restoring economic freedom and turning back Marxism.
That said, he was not a nice man.
Ignorance follows ignorance on this thread, thanks to ... the MSM. Pinochet was a hero, no two buts about it, for saving his country from the horrors that so many countries have experienced in the past century. Unfortunately, people had to die, some innocent, most naive idealists. Post-WWII civilization has lost its bearings, its definitions of good and evil, and the Left and now Islamists are using our confusion to defeat us. Sorry, comrades, but in these wars, heads have to roll.
Didn't the late Ambassador Kirkpatrick defend Pinochet? Wasn't she one of the few to recognize his accomplishments in Chile? If so, it is somewhat ironic that the two died in the same week.
Somebody is going nuts with the keywords.
Even though Pinochet kept communism out of Chile, I doubt that he will escape eternal retribution when you consider the thousands of people killed by his regime. From his regime's record, Pinochet doesn't look like a candidate for heavenly bliss.
