Hell has a new employee...Pinochet is dead at 91.
Hermógenes Pérez de Arce, a brilliant mind and a staunch Pinochet supporter, has a website worth looking at: http://www.policyofliberty.net/HPdA/english.html
Those crying over Pinochets alleged apathy towards human rights abuses and disregard for the rule of law would do well to remember that he, like the Junta in Argentina, was engaged in a war in the 1970s, which pitted them against some of the greatest purveyors of inhumanity and destruction that the South American continent has ever seen.
The threat that these marxist guerillas presented cannot be underestimated. They were motivated, well financed, well supplied, and had plenty of advisors and outside help coming in from Cuba and the USSR.
Look at Argentina for instance, where the communist Monteneros kidnapped and executed Pedro Aremburu, a former president of the republic for pete's sake. It was war in the streets, and if you will permit the cliché -desperate times demand drastic measures.
Had it not been for the military governments of Chile, Argentina, Brazil, Ecuador, etc., US support, and institutions like the School of the Americas, who knows what the world would look like today!?!
I suppose those criticizing simply would have advocated a more "nuanced approach," ala John Kerry and the apologists and enablers of today. Some things never change
It's a pity what passes for thought these days on Free Republic. You should be ashamed of yourself. Christ is not someone you should lightly dismiss in the name of hate.
Imagine if Kerensky has shown some balls and liquidated Trotsky, Lenin, and Stalin and gang in 1917.
I confess I am new to this debate; but I would point out that everything you mentioned above is exactly the same sort of thing that leftists regularly accuse George Bush of today. I think Amnesty International produces "detailed reports" of abuses committed by every non-leftist regime. If the accusations come from pinkos, take them with a huge grain of salt.
Define "voluntarily." The U.S. pressured him into holding a plebiscite on continuing his dictatorship. Despite the fact that the vote was heavily rigged for El Caudillo, Pinochet still lost. Instead of stepping down right away, he appointed himself Senator-for-life and remained Commander-in-Chief of the Army, where he maintained effective control over the country.
I am an atheist, my dear Melas, I am an atheist.
BS. Sounds good on the surface as with all good rhetoric it brings to mind visions of falling red soldiers and the executions of dicators.
When you get down to the reality of it, and realize that it might be your unarmed neighbor drug out of his house for holding the wrong beliefs, or a pretty coed who naively bought into the socialist agenda who's murdered in a secret warehouse, then suddenly this business of killing communists isn't quite as attractive.
The reality never lives up the propaganda.
Quote-""Commies are not human"? I'm sorry, but Christ would disagree."
And commies would refute Christs existence as God and throw you and your family in jail for even implying as much, as they are currently doing in China as you read this message.
I'm so sorry. But there is hope for you, I was an atheist at one time too.
Having been born and lived under communism, boo friggin' hoo. When Communists show a respect for human rights, property, and life in general, then I'll accord them the same.
I'm not defending communists and their practices, nor their ideology. But to consider people subhuman for their beliefs, well, that just doesn't seem right.
And besides, God loved even his enemies and his oppressors.
The threat that these marxist guerillas presented cannot be underestimated. They were motivated, well financed, well supplied, and had plenty of advisors and outside help coming in from Cuba and the USSR.
What it comes down to is media coverage, which as we all know is left-leaning.
Poster CitadelArmyJag has is it right; murderous communists goons portrayed as 'people's hero's; those that fight them, right-wing terror states.
"Pinochet was against communism. So your "Hell" remark was unjustified."
So was Hitler.
You that's just the point. Respect for life is absolute. You have a lot of maturing left to do. This attitude you have of "I'll be nice to him as soon as he's nice to me." should instantly be recognizable to any parent. Luckily, most of our children outgrow before adulthood.
A freedom-loving pro-democracy president does not hold purges. What, there weren't enough jails for him to put commies in until the instability was sorted out? Imprisoning people for indefinite periods isn't so good either, but it beats putting a bullet in the head of some guy who might be innocent.
If you say so.
Read Mein Kampf sometime, and you'll realize the disingeniuty of your comment.
Pinochet was engaged in a struggle against communists.
Hitler's agenda encompassed that and much much more.
