I know a Marine. He sits in a bar in North Carolina. He came there by way of Fallujah. The same close-cropped blonde fuzz glimmers on his head in the dim light as burned under the hot sun of Iraq. He’s the greatest storyteller I know, spinning tales about his overseas exploits, both combat and otherwise—only with the express permission of the mixed company present, of course.
He speaks with a wit and color that would surprise John Kerry. He is not a quiet man. But I wonder what he would say this week. I wonder what he would say to the Iraq Study Group’s proposed “change in the primary mission of U.S. forces in Iraq that will enable the United States to begin to move its combat forces out of Iraq responsibly.”
I imagine he’d just shake his head at me. He knows what the new “primary mission” is, as does anyone who’s even skimmed the report, and it’s not the type of mission Marines are accustomed to. The mission is to lose. Lose slowly, lose “responsibly,” lose diplomatically, but lose without a doubt. My lively Marine friend would likely be disgusted into silence.

I have read stats that about 80-85 percent of the U.S. military voted for President Bush in the '04 election and that about 15 percent voted for Sen. Kerry. I am an ex-Squid and I have had a few run-ins with Marines...
they are abso-fu*king-lutely capable of handling this.
Just un-leash them, let them do what they are trained to do... kill.
Why is everyone so surprised that the American military has been trained to kill and detroy and just generally make it a bad day for whoever decides to cross us.
Un-leash the wolf... let's start killing... that is all they understand.
These are people who will want to kill you if your goat comes into their yard.

I think if you look at it by branch the Marine Corps is like 85%, followed by the Army around 75-80%, with the Navy and Airforce like 50-50. So the overall military vote becomes something around 60%.
Dont know where you find those stats and i think you would have a hell of time looking for them, but i remember something like that around the 2004 election.

James Baker is an expert at losing: Losing in Beirut, losing in Gulf War I, and losing in the Pali-Israeli conflict. He should be tried for treason.
There seems sto be some confusion.
The US defeated Saddam quickly with the loss of a raelatively small number of soldiers.
The US is unable to defeat an insurrection because it is fighting it with its hands tied behind its back.
The two things are different.
Anyone who thinks the US can be defeated by a conventional military force is delusional.
The a magazine called "Army Times" did that poll and it was about 75% voted for Bush. You can Google it with some effort.

We ought to debate the merit of shifting to a training mission in the Sunni trianagle versus carrying the combat load indefinitely. This calculation of our national interest is not advanced by maudlin emotionalism.
