New Episcopal bishop arrested in anti-war rally [San Francisco, natch]

SAN FRANCISCO -- The new leader of Northern California Episcopalians was arrested in a protest of the Iraq war, although it took a couple of tries before he was granted his wish to be handcuffed.

The Rt. Rev. Mark Handley Andrus was arrested Thursday for blocking the entrance to the San Francisco federal building. He was among about 200 protesters who had marched from Grace Cathedral as part of a weekly anti-war rally that has been held for about five years.

Federal Protective Service officers arrested 11 other protesters for blocking the door, and all were cited and released.

"God is with all who have suffered in Iraq," the bishop, wearing his purple robe and carrying a shepherd's staff, said. "This war needs to be opposed. Even though there is widespread sentiment against the war, we need to continue to push for peace."

The officers had passed over Andrus in a first round of arrests because he was not positioned directly in front of the federal building's doors. After Andrus got up, moved a few steps and lay down again directly in front of the entrance, the officers returned and placed him in handcuffs, while one said, "How are you?" and shook the cleric's hand.

Many of those at the protest made it clear they too wanted to be handcuffed, apparently to make a political statement. A half-dozen other people who lay down in front of the door got up and left when it became clear no more arrests would be made.

"What do you have to do to get arrested in this town?" said Matt Cantor.

"Well, the bishop got arrested," said Cathy Lipscomb, another door blocker who wasn't apprehended. "That was the important thing."

The Episcopal Diocese of California chose Andrus as bishop last spring.

Wouldnt this 'man of god' have better understanding by making a trip to the war himself before protesting against it.

A nice walk thru Sadr city and visit to Saddam's mass graves...

Its easy to protest in a place where people yawn at 'yet another protest' and those who break laws get a slap on the hand.

The number of genuine Anglican worshippers in San Francisco simply can't exceed a handful.

Note that the protests evidently started with the war in Afghanistan. So they opposed the removal of the Taliban. I bet if Bin Laden is arrested and put on trial, they will hold weekly "Free Osama" demonstrations.

I don't know, maybe it's me, but whenever I read something like this:

Bishop Marc Handley Andrus of the Episcopal Diocese of California was arrested December 7 for blocking the front door of the San Francisco federal building to protest the deaths caused by the Iraq war.

His participation in the protest and his arrest are "just one piece of a sustained effort" to work for peace, Andrus told ENS December 8.

Andrus said that his protest sprang not just from his own convictions about the war but "from a base of considered opinion by the House of Bishops and the Episcopal Church about this war."

"It’s not a capricious act, but it is my conviction that while there’s widespread opposition to this war, that the elected leaders need to know that we continue to want concerted and active moves towards peace," he said.

Andrus, carrying his crozier and singing "Down by the Riverside,’’ was among 250 protesters, including members of the Episcopal Peace Fellowship and people of other faiths, who had marched from Grace Cathedral, on Nob Hill, to join the weekly "die-in" at on Golden Gate Avenue near City Hall.

The bishop celebrated a requiem Holy Eucharist at the plaza in front of the building. After participants received communion they went one by one to lie down in front of the federal building’s two main doors. Andrus was the first protestor to do so. Federal Protective Service officers began arresting protesters for lying down and blocking the building’s two main doors.

I immediately think of this:

Take heed that you do not do your charitable deeds before men, to be seen by them. Otherwise you have no reward from your Father in heaven.  Therefore, when you do a charitable deed, do not sound a trumpet before you as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets, that they may have glory from men. Assuredly, I say to you, they have their reward(Matthew 6:1-2).
