4 dead, including gunman, in downtown shooting; Metra running again
Four people, including the gunman, have died after a shooting at a skyscraper west of Chicago's Loop, police said tonight.
The shooting at 500 W. Madison St., which includes the Ogilvie Transportation Center.
(snip)
Police Supt. Phil Cline said the dead included the gunman and three others. An additional person was wounded.
Cline said the gunman, a male who has not yet been identified, wanted to see a specific person when he entered a law firm on the 38th floor of the Citigroup Center office tower shortly before 3:15 p.m. He was armed with a snub-nose revolver, knife and hammer.
"He was escorted upstairs with a security guard, and he had a manila envelope that held his weapons," Cline said.
When he arrived on the 38th floor, he asked to see a particular individual in the office.
"The offender then displayed a handgun and chained the door shut with a padlock and chain that he had brought with him. He then began shooting," Cline said. "He grabbed a hostage."
Uniformed police officers arrived first and secured the area, Cline said. Then a SWAT team accessed the office using a different entrance and engaged the suspect, he added.
They confronted the man in a hallway, where he alternately pointed his gun at the head of his hostagea man who was unhurtand his own head. Cline said that when the SWAT officers had a clear shot, they opened fire. It was about a 45-yard shot taken with a sniper rifle, he said, and the bullet fatally wounded the suspect.
Cline declined to identify the dead or wounded, but said the man the suspect had come to the office to see was killed.

There were several fatal shootings in Chicago today but this happens everyday in the city of "no handguns"
Was the skyscraper ok?
When I heard they did not identify the shooter I was afraid it was connected to the jihadi incident as part of a larger plot, but after seeing the rest of the facts of this story it appears not to be the case
But how is that possible? Handguns are banned in Chicago! /s
Gun bans have once again been proven ineffective. Prayers to the victims and their families.
Even before I read the story I had a hunch that this incident happened at a law office.
--I'm gonna take a flyer and say this was a disgruntled inventor angry, justifiably or not, that some big shot lawyer screwed him over.--
More likely a guy with a loose screw who thought he'd been screwed over.
Followup:

The gunman, identified by police Saturday as Joe Jackson, 59, of the 5900 block of West Chicago.
The Victims are:
Michael R. McKenna, a 58-year-old Edgewater patent attorney who rented space from the firm.
Allen J. Hoover, 65, of Wilmette, a partner at Wood Phillips.
Paul Goodson, 78, a retired school teacher who worked for the law firm in the afternoons, distributing mail and handling deliveries.
Apparent Motive:
The shooter was angry over what he thought was the theft of what a source called a toilet seat in a truck,".
Screw over not the screw that is loose.
Running for the Dumbest Comment prize?
What "Emperor" would you be referring to? Laws in this nation are made by the People's representatives so presumably the Emperor is the People.
So there is competition for the Dumbest Comment award I see.
I'm sure fifty unskilled people opening fire would have produced NO unwarranted casualities.
What "jihad incident" are you speaking of?
no need
your ha ing a fine go at it
That's a typical comment the tyrant's apologists toss out. Wave your hands and cry chaos and panic. That's your way.
MOLON LABE.
Quite the contrary it is YOU who is panicking, waving your hands and calling chaos.
This should have never come to that since most big buildings here have been locked down since 9/11.
However, your ideas might result in the slaughter of more Yahoos than innocents as they produce a circular fire on each other while the others dive under their desks.
Or is it your belief that the mere possession of a firearm produces intelligence?
And which "tyrant" are you howling about anyway?
Illiterate and clever what a combo.
You gotta give him credit. He did kill his intended target. He did kill another attorney. How sad that the retired school teacher got in the way during the melee. Most wackos take hostages and only end up dying by themselves. At least he accomplished his goal. As much as people want to mock and make fun of him -- he accomplished what he went there to do -- assasinate who he thought was responsible for his troubles and die himself. What a useless life.
still not as dense as you
I don't think so at all. CCW holders generally practice, retain their composure and are on target. Not that many people have them, or would have them, so your idea that there'd be shots going everywhere is pointless.
"Or is it your belief that the mere possession of a firearm produces intelligence?" Mere possession? I practice, so do other CCW holders.
"Quite the contrary it is YOU who is panicking, waving your hands and calling chaos."
Nah. It's grabbers that do that. They have no evidence. They simply invent stuff and like, "circles of fire".
"And which "tyrant" are you howling about anyway?"
Daley and Cline. Don't tell me they were elected, because elections don't justify breaking the 2nd Amend, or denying folks effective self defense. Most folks would have a gun, because they're afraid of them. Daley and his grabbers pals play on that fear, causing it to spread. They'll be doing a blood dance over this one too.
