Victory?

THEN CHANGE THE RULES OF ENGAGEMENT!

Defeat the enemy. Pound them until they surrender. THEN rebuild.

What we are doing now is just stupid.

They painted themselves into a corner though. Aggressive campaigning could win the war militarily if coupled with other strategies (including dissolving the Iraqi government and installing a military governor), but it would show the raison d'etre of the war, establishing a democracy in Iraq, to be bunk. Bush made the mistake of justifying the war by gimmicks before it was won on the ground. We'd lose just as much face doing what we have to do to win as we would by letting it go.

If only they had crushed the rioting after the fall of Saddam. But they didn't, and it showed the Iraqis that we did not have what it takes to undergo a successful occupation and pacification of a large country.

We're not being told what's really going on here. Cheney to Saudia Arabia, Bush's middle east trip, Iraqi's in the Whitehouse, Blair here, Rumsfeld gone - there is something going on that is not being said by anyone. I think someone has designed a grand strategy and all this Baker commission stuff is just cover. I have no idea - but all the sides trips and meetings imply that something is happening.

Rush said the same yesterday, Jake: http://www.rushlimbaugh.com/home/daily/site_120606/content/rush_is_right.guest.html

That he [Baker]dares to be on a committee to criticize this President is the height of arrogance on his part.

That has a lot of competition in the "height of arrogance" department with Baker's pronouncement from on high that we should just take the Golan Heights from Israel and give it to Syria.

That one item right there ought to be enough for any real thinking person to know where this report belongs (hint - mine's under my desk).

Just because the President isn't as eloquent as Blair (who is?), don't think that he's not effective.

If you measure effectiveness on the level of public support for our continued presence in Iraq, he has not been effective. Moreover, the public does not see Iraq as part of the WOT. Bush must use his bully pulpit more effectively.

I hit the abuse button on this jackass. He's a pain in the rear. We need a break of the relentless trashing of the President.

"The AP got busted last week for fabricating dozens of Iraq blood and guts reports. When the war with Israel was in the news, the MSM got caught making up pictures for the camera."

I believe the media has done the real work for the opposition over the last 2 years, far more than the Democrat politicians themselves. The importance of this is not to be denied, even though most Americans probably do not get it. OTOH, I haven't watched TV in 10 or 12 years, so I may not be as swayed by it as most.

Still, my view of things is that we are in trouble because W and his people were unwilling or unable to win decisively againt the insurgents in Iraq.

My belief, even though W declined to articulate it, is that we went into Iraq, not to find WMD's, not to give democracy to Iraqis, but primarily to win another victory over an evil Islamic state, and thus win another decisive victory in the WOT. If we leave now, the opposite effect will have been achieved - the scoreboard will show the terrorists with a big lead over the Western world. W is the commander in chief on this, victory or defeat is his responsibility by definition. Credit or blame, whichever is pertinent when this thing ends, will be his.

I sure hope your vision is wrong.

Amazing the media blackouts of hearing this president speeches and comments. You'd think he never speaks.

Many of you people act just like liberals when somebody disagrees with you.

As opposed to you, who regurgitates leftist anti-war rhetoric on a conservative forum, and then tells people who disagree with you to 'bake cookies.'

You, mr miller, are a fraud.

"..we are defending freedom and the American way of life there."

Huh? While we are giving up the American way of life at home?

And those turkeys think Iraq needs the UN and the EU to come to their rescue.

Not a single country on earth would welcome the UN in their midst.

Considering the EU cannot deal with the terrorists in their own midst, how can they possibly add anything constructive to Iraq.

Yes, and the commanders on the ground, the President and VP would not risk lives, while waiting around for a date to give up.

It may not be their choice if Congress decides otherwise. Once you set a date to draw down our combat troops not linked to the conditions on the ground, it becomes harder to justify the loss of American lives. You are either committed to victory or not.

"The prime minister put it this way: He said, 'The violence is not an accident or a result of faulty planning.

It is a deliberate strategy. It is the direct result of outside extremists teaming up with internal extremists — Al Qaeda with the Sunni insurgents and Iran with the Shia militia — to foment hatred and to throttle at birth the possibility of a nonsectarian democracy.'

You are right, and I appreciate your comments," Bush said.

"It is a deliberate strategy"

He forgot to say winning strategy...

You are completely ignoring the media blackout and distortion.

You can't blame the warping of the American mind by the left on poor communications skills.

He uses the bully pulpit very effectively when it comes to the war. It's just that no one except conservative news junkies like us even hear him.

That's reality, kabar.

I'm very concerned - the biggest battle is about to come: the 2008 Election. Yes, we were all worried about Kerry - but underneath it all, was there not a glint of realisation that he simply didn't have a chance?

With Hillary it's different. She is pure evil where Kerry was pathetic. The conservative movement needs to be strong, united and purposeful - not tearing each other to pieces.

Regards, Ivan

"I guess all the libs forget this quote from President John F. Kennedy, "Let every nation know, whether it wishes us well or ill, that we shall pay any price, bear any burden, meet any hardship, support any friend, oppose any foe to assure the survival and the success of liberty."

Actually the baby-boomer libs likely remember it very well. It was a very, very well known and emphatic statement. The problem is that they also remember that it wasn't worth the proverbial paper it was written on. I believed him at the time, but it turned out to be just big empty words from a guy reading what his speechwriter wrote, and probably really thinking about his next meeting with Marilyn Monroe.
