An FBI agent was killed Wednesday during a live-fire training exercise, the agency said.
Supervisory Special Agent Gregory J. Rahoi, 38, of Wisconsin, was shot Wednesday during the exercise at Fort A.P. Hill, a sprawling Army base about an hour south of Washington. (DC)
Rahoi was flown to Mary Washington Hospital in Fredericksburg, where he later was pronounced dead, the FBI said in a release.
Rahoi joined the FBI in 1997 and had served with the agency's Hostage Rescue Team for the past six years.
Fort A.P. Hill hosts about 60,000 soldiers, sailors, airmen and Marines annually at the 76,000-acre post's live-fire ranges and other training facilities. Federal law enforcement agencies also use the facilities on a regular basis, the FBI said.
The last time someone died during live fire training at Fort A.P. Hill was in December 2000, said Ken Perrotte, a spokesman for the base.
The FBI and Army are investigating the incident

As an aside, to the best of anyone's knowledge, has the "Hostage Rescue Team" ever actually rescued a hostage?

Why is the FBI running live-fire exercises?

I don't know because I'm not sure exactly when the HRT formally came into existence.
I do remember an incident in the early to mid 80s when some loon was holding a passenger plane hostage on the ground. An FBI agent crawled through a window and shot and killed the perp. I remember the story because of the reporter's whiny sympathy for the would-be hijacker.
Nowadays? Haven't heard of any. The FBI have probably killed more people than they've rescued.

Live-fire exercises are routinely done in training.

Hard practices = easy missions.
Spent many days evading PAVN in RVN, but that was never as hard as evading the San Blas Indians who were paid a $25 a head bounty if they caught us on mission work-ups and training exercises in Panama.

By the FBI? Why?
The only reason I can think of is to feed their own little egos as "The Praetorian Guard".

Well, yeah, but if the San Blas caught you, I'm pretty sure they just turned you in to collect the $25 - they wouldn't shoot you.

The Fort's 76,000 acres big. That's 120 square miles. Lots of bad stuff can happen in that amount of space.
