No, they didn't find his family because of him, but by leaving his family he was trying to increase their chances of survival. He died trying to save his family.

(2) When help was not forthcoming he went out into the cold to try and find help.

As a father who has dealt with 7 month old children, I would be fearful of what would happen when my wife ran out of breast milk.

A child that small can die of dehydration very quickly without sustenance.

Maybe in two days.

I read that he did a lot in the days before he left them such as burning the car tires for warmth and giving up his share of food. I imagine leaving was a last desperate attempt to save them. Those other actions may have helped them survive long enough to be found.
