What may be common sense to wilderness aware people... unfortunately isn't to most city-folk. I noticed many in my office asking why didn't he eat snow, etc.

I'm not assuming that the Kims were not wilderness aware and we probably won't know the whole story, now that James is dead :(

Also in times of stress you tend to forget everything you know and try to survive purely on instinct.

they type "prayers for the family" as if typing that was actually praying

MOST people who type that have actually stoppped their thoughts to pray. I'm wondering why someone would think otherwise. No need to reply; I think we may be on a different wavelength.

They had thousands if acres of "fuel" available. Even though their vehicle was out of gas, they still had the capacity to burn their tires, why not wood? it makes you warm and cooks your food, melts your snow for water, it also dries out your clothes.

Are urban people that naive and not able to understand such basic survival skills?

Seems like a person has about a fifteen second delay these days on FR after he posts something before some other braniac shows up with some snide remark or Ad Hominem attack.

You forgot the fun part where they pm their posse to come to the thread to create the impression of a majority opinion.

"Oh my! He said that? I just randomly wandered onto this thread out of sheer luck, and I'm in total agreement with you! (wink wink)"

Ground with high water content would be frozen.. but much of it is not.

Really easy to see this... go to the mountains. Just because there are freezing temperatures, doesn't mean the entire ground turns into an ice block.

Accepting the inevitable.

I'm reminded of a Stanley Baker story.

Stanley Baker was an English actor who you may recall played the lead in Zulu which co starred Michael Caine.
As Michael tells it, Stanley, knowing he was dieing from some sort of cancer, traveled to Wales and rented a room at some inn. He then asked the inn keeper and his wife to keep his presence there secret and to assist him as needed as he deteriorated.

Michael, who considered Stanley a dear friend, theorized Baker did not want his friends to suffer....so he died alone, by choice...in that inn.

That seems a little paranoid (for this thread), but that could simply be naivete.

Imagine being a member of a family and reading such posts signed by some anonymous strangers who go by screen handles like "Revolting cat!" or "Dead Corpse":

Remember, this family is a young, hip, SF-tech type. It would probably give the wife a sad smile to see "Revolting Cat!" I'm sure the culture at cnet can be equally irreverent.

However, you have a point about "Dead Corpse."

I got lost in the Allegheny National Forest for about 2 days. This is an area that gets lake effect precipitation from Lake Erie. It was fortunate I had a stove, because you could not find dry wood anywhere. Any kindling type material you would have had to pack in, and the quantity needed to get a fire going would be pretty large.

AGREE..

Besides that, we don't really know what went on in that car. We don't know that the poor wife wasn't going stark raving mad out of her mind or had panic attacks?..

So maybe the distraught husband figured he had better TRY and find some help. It was, after all, over a week that they were all trapped inside of that boxed in car..

No food, no diapers..nothing..So desperate Dads do desperate things and he did what he felt he had to do or die trying..

I'm so sorry he died..He was a good man.

Amen Howlin, I was just thinking the same thing.

Ping to the others, I don't know if you've seen this thread.

I'm guessing that after a solid week had gone by and they'd seen no evidence of any rescue attempts, things started to get weird in their own minds. Whether it's the correct belief or not, they probably started to really think that nobody was going to come looking for them after seven solid days.

OK, I'm sorry if I harshed your mellow (no, seriously.) I should have kept my observations to myself or posted them minus the judgments, like King of Florida had done before me.

Oh that predictable group is out in full force today.

God bless James Kim for trying to save his family. What a courageous soul.

Prayers for the family. May they find comfort in the knowledge that Mr. Kim's final wish was granted--that his family be safe.

I will admit that I have witnessed many odd behavior patterns in people under such stress. One was the victim of a serious plane crash in one of Alaska's most remote areas. after several months of survival, and being isolated, the victim avoided rescuers even after they discovered the wreckage. He even shot at C.A.P. aircraft when they tried to rescue him. He then committed suicide before they could get to him. It was the most tragic and extreme example of dementia that has been recorded in the region.
