Principal, Assistant Suspended Over Cheerleader Flap
MCKINNEY, Texas -- The principal and assistant principal at McKinney North High School could lose their jobs over student discipline, or the lack thereof.
McKinney Independent School District Superintendent Tom Crowe placed both Principal Linda Theret and Assistant Principal Richard Brunner on administrative leave effective Monday.
Crowe said the school has a misdirection of authority, not just with the cheerleading squad but with a variety of students, and has even called for a financial audit.
The move comes after an investigation into the punishment of cheerleaders who took risque photos at a condom store. The investigation began after the school's cheerleading sponsor, Michaela Ward, resigned after saying the school made it difficult to discipline the girls.
The cheerleaders were originally suspended, but Theret cut those suspensions in half, NBC 5 reported.
"After they got the 15 days in probation they just continued to break rules. I just wanted them to be held accountable for their actions," said Ward.
Theret's daughter is on the cheerleading squad.
"I think it went beyond just cheerleaders. Again, as you look at consistency of discipline issues, ensuring that all students are treated fairly and consistently," said Crowe.
Theret's attorney, Bob Hinton, said his client didn't do anything wrong.
"Linda didn't take part in discipline that had to do with her daughter at any point except when directed to do so by Tom Crowe. Now it appears that that is coming back to haunt her," said Hinton.
Theret's contract with the school district expires in July 2008. The McKinney School Board is expected to decide on the future of Theret and Brunner at its next meeting.

They show the store on the news reports on TV. Says CONDOMS on the front of store, which looks like it's in a strip shopping center.

Saw one in Ann Arbor, Michigan, about 14 years ago. Probably did good business with all those U of M students.

Huh? I don't get it. Some high school cheerleaders took funny pictures of themselves at a condom store? What's the big deal?
Here in Houston, we have one called Condom Sense. Little place in a strip mall.
