Virtual Fence = Virtual Corruption? Speaker Pelosi's post-Hastings fallback choice to head the House Intelligence Committee, Rep. Silvestre Reyes, voted against building the 700 mile border fence. He prefers a system of video surveillance cameras, apparently. And gee, it seems that his daughter works for a firm that won a government contract to provide such surveillance services! What's more, according to WaPo's John Mintz (who broke the story) the firm did a really bad job. TPM Muckraker summarizes:

Curt Weldons daughter gets the FBI raid just before the election? Sandy Bergers candidate Joe Sestak wins while the FBI raid fades away. Nepotism may run down both sides of the aisle. Mrs. Daschle was a lobbyist for some airlines while business concerning airlines was before the senate. No big deal. Move on.

a good anecdote about a 12 y.o. kid taking a whack at nepotism in Chi-town politics elsewhere on FR this am:

Kid steals show at (Crook) county swear-in - Republican's son pokes fun at Dems' nepotism

Rep. Silvestre Reyes, voted against building the 700 mile border fence. He prefers a system of video surveillance cameras, apparently.

It seems Rep. Reyes has changed his mind in the past few years since being in the Border patrol, before he became a powerful democrat, heading a committee. He used to admit a fence will work!

Rep. Duncan Hunter sat on the subcommittee panel and questioned INS Commissioner Doris Meissner regarding the failure of Operation Gatekeeper, and questioned El Paso Border Patrol sector chief, Silvestre Reyes, on the feasibility of having a triple fence in San Diego. When asked if this type of fence, adequately patrolled by agents, could replicate the same results as Operation Hold the Line in El Paso, Chief Reyes stated that it would.

REYES’ CHILDREN WORKED FOR BORDER PROJECT CONTRACTORS
Quorum Report / Newsclips ^ | April 25, 2005 | Harvey Kronberg, www.quorumreport.com,

All three children of U.S. Rep. Silvestre Reyes, D-El Paso, worked in some capacity for defense contractors that were criticized by the Office of Inspector General of the U.S. General Services Administration for installing faulty or incomplete equipment for a border security technology system. International Microwave Corp. and L-3 Communications Holdings Inc. — through their political action committees and others — also gave Reyes about $17,000 in campaign contributions during the past five years. Reyes, who was in his El Paso district office Friday, said that while he was a proponent of the border technology system that the General Services Administration audit mentioned, he had nothing to do with International Microwave or L-3 Communications employing or paying for services provided by his children, Rebecca Reyes, Silvestre Reyes Jr. and Monica Reyes. Before working for the defense contractors, Rebecca Reyes worked for her father in his congressional office in Washington and for the city of Washington.

So, he was 'FOR' border security until it became possible that building it might actually happen?

The now public secret is that since Pelosi had to dump
the impeached Judge Hastings - thus alienating the Black Caucus - she was under pressure from the Hispanic Caucus to choose Reyes. She hasn't been installed as majority leader and already her leadership appears more farcical every day. Remember the "culture of corruption" mantra? Well, it appears we have a new culture growing strongly even before January. Only in America!
