A Day in the Life of President Bush (photos): 12.5.06

President Bush met with Robert Gates, his nominee to replace Secretary of Defense Rumsfeld, before Gates headed to the Senate for his confirmation hearing. View brief webcast of Bush and Gates at WH today. The Senate Armed Services Committee voted unanimously (21-0) to send Gates's nomination to the full Senate; a vote is expected Wednesday.

Bush had lunch with James Baker. The much-leaked Iraqi study group report is scheduled for a full public release tomorrow.

The leader of the Supreme Council for the Islamic Revolution in Iraq, Abdul Aziz al-Hakim, met with VP Cheney. Tony Snow said today, "... as Mr. al Hakim noted, the sectarian violence has been going on [in Iraq] for 82 years [since 1924]."

Those who have followed this Bush family through trial and fatigue, through more than one attempt to steal an election, who have watched President George Herbert Walker Bush preside over an immensely successful family and know his deeply-held emotions and pride in his children, will understand why "Poppy" Bush broke up when speaking to Floridians in Tallahassee about the service of his son, outgoing governor Jeb Bush. Here's a link to the video. Pres. Bush 41 said, "The moral of this story is to serve with honor, and your governor has served with honor."

Click here to see Deck the Halls, and Welcome All, the WH web site with videos and information about decorating the White House for Christmas -- this year and back through 2001. Mrs. Bush said, "Roland, our former pastry chef, came back -- by popular demand -- to build a beautiful gingerbread house that all of you can see right here. If you look closely, you'll see that Barney and Miss Beazley are driving Santa's sleigh at the very top. Kitty is here, right underneath the birdhouse."

I wonder if it eaten or if by the time the decorations are dismantled it is dusty/dirty etc because it does not look as if it is covered, though I suppose if you took the icing off the gingerbread underneath might be OK.

I would suspect even if it is supposed to be thrown a few people do try a bit.

I would say if he did he would not last and I would say the remark he made may well have just been badly worded when trying to get a point over. I know your system is different to ours especially with the confirmation hearings etc but I know in Britain if a Cabinet Minister was too outspoken and it seemed they were not towing party line they would be asked to resign.

It was a major goof/gaffe on the new SECDEF's part; if he doesn't think we are winning, he should not have taken the job. I don't care that he corrected it later on, it will be all over AlJazerra, the Arab Street and in the AQ camps. What a doofus. It doesn't give me much confidence in his ability. He serves at the pleasure of the President, and I would bet the President is not all that pleased with Gate's performance today. Poor Tony who had to go out and do the correcting, and shame on Gates for being so stupid in his comments. Egads. I wonder what the troops are thinking????

The one about not winning in Iraq but as I said I only saw that in isolation not what was said before or after.

Yeah but Powell didn't work out that great. I dunno. I hope you're right. I'm just worried. I'm not ready to totally give up.

You're right about Powell, but think about the circumstances. The messed up election, President Bush's newness in office, the popularity of Powell and his pre-disposed pacifism, pre 9/11.

Things were different then. Gates will be fine.

I felt so badly for GHWB, watching the video -- he tried so hard to collect himself, said Bar would probably bawl him out (or similar words) for losing it ... he can't help how he's wired and man, it all seemed to come crashing down on him in that speech.

Tony Snow did a great job of putting Gates' No in context. Again and again, Tony kept bringing in the other remarks that Gates made. It's worth viewing if you have the time.

in Britain if a Cabinet Minister was too outspoken and it seemed they were not towing party line they would be asked to resign.

Same here, after a reasonable amount of time to let the newbie adjust. Also, this president would look at willful intent to go one's own way vs. deer-in-the-media-lights mistake.

That's an admirable goal. I'd love to do more than take a tour of the WH some day.

I'll give him a chance. But I'll be watching him carefully.
