SAN FRANCISCO -- City officials in San Francisco have ordered the immediate removal of cookie-scented strips from bus shelters -- one day after they went in as part of a marketing campaign to promote milk.
The demand was made to CBS Outdoor, the company that holds the advertising contract for the city's bus shelters, late Monday night.
The company was asked by the Municipal Transportation Agency, which runs the city's public transit system and has jurisdiction over the bus shelters, to remove the scented strips today, said Steve Shinn, a vice president of the company.
The move came amid public concern over potential allergic reactions to scented products.
Under the advertising contract, the Municipal Transportation Agency can request the removal of ads deemed objectionable.
The scented adhesive strips were affixed Monday to the interiors of five bus shelters in the Union Square, Financial District and Nob Hill neighborhoods.
The gimmick was part of the California Milk Processor Board's "Got Milk?'' campaign. The idea was that once people got a whiff of chocolate chip cookies, they'd hanker for a glass of milk.
After The Chronicle ran a story on the promotion last week, advocates for people who are sensitive to scents began pushing for the plan to be snuffed out and suggested that the city could be held liable if the aroma made people sick.

Much better to stay with the smell of malt liquor, BO and urine than freshly baked cookies!

Even the wholesome scent of cookies STINKS in SF,CA
The local liberal media here pointed out that it would be cruel for homeless people to smell cookies while they were hungry.
Really.
Only homos are allergic to freshly baked cookies....oh wait, its SF...makes sense then...

Well, those combined with rank feces remind San Fransicans of their first sexual experiences.

Oh fer Pete's sake!
Does this mean I can sue people who walk by me wearing too much perfume/after shave?
Yeesh!
San Francesspool.
The hypochondriacs strike again!
This is going in my list of pith.
LOL! I remember when NYC went to using a strong orange-scented cleaning solution in the subways to cover just the smells you mentioned. It was great and really worked, but the problem was that I have never been able to taste OJ or smell or taste orange-flavored anything without thinking of the subways and malt liquor, BO and urine. Law of unintended consequences.
So was it an order, demand or just a request?
