Minuteman consulting charity fined[The Declaration Foundation](Simcox-Minutemen)
The Washington Times ^ | December 5, 2006 | Jerry Seper

Posted on 12/05/2006 7:01:06 AM PST by SwinneySwitch

One of the charitable organizations cited by Minuteman Civil Defense Corps boss Chris Simcox on why financial accountability concerns raised by some corps members were unfounded has been fined for failing to keep its own financial records in order, The Washington Times has learned.

The Declaration Foundation, a tax-exempt charity created by conservative activist Alan Keyes, who has vigorously supported the Minuteman movement, was fined $6,500 in August and prohibited by the Pennsylvania Bureau of Charitable Organizations from soliciting donations until it becomes "properly registered."

The Aug. 18 "agreement and order," signed by Declaration Foundation Executive Director Mary Parker Lewis, a top Minuteman adviser, acknowledged that the charity made false statements in seeking to solicit donations, failed to properly administer money it had collected, and withheld documents sought as part of an "investigative subpoena."

According to the bureau, the Declaration Foundation failed over a four-year period to submit audited financial statements, gave false information when it said it did not share revenue with other nonprofit or tax-exempt groups, and misstated the truth when it said none of its officers or employees was tied to any vendor providing services or goods.

The bureau said the Declaration Foundation improperly shared revenue with the Declaration Alliance, another tax-exempt charity founded by Mr. Keyes, which also has been active in overseeing the Minuteman Civil Defense Corps (MCDC).

The Declaration Foundation is at the center of an intricate weave of conservative organizations founded by Mr. Keyes or tied to longtime Keyes associates now working with MCDC. They have served as mentors for Mr. Simcox and provided consulting and financial services for the group's fundraising and media activities.

According to Internal Revenue Service records, the Declaration Foundation reported more than $600,000 in contributions over the past two years and the....

"Just for the record", your post is still ridiculous.

Jesse Jackson is a socialist.

Alan Keyes is a constitutionalist who believes in the principles spelled out on the homepage of this website.

If I had to guess, you're probably much closer to Jackson on the political spectrum than you are to Keyes.

Hence the ridiculousness...

I comprehend the situation just fine. We are known by the company we keep, and you, well you keep company with a den of thieves. Maybe they'll let you off "guard-duty" so you can get in on the game.

Why do developments like this draw a yawn factor from me because I'm not surprised? Am I alone?

LOL!!

I'm not surprised. I'm just amazed it took this long....

This isn't about anybody else, Newt, Bush, Cheney or the Man in the Moon. This is about MCDC and DF.

What this is also about, and tactfully unstated in your post, is leadership - or lack thereof. The quote Mr. Seper failed to get was Dr. Keyes', "No Comment", or an explanation as to when he is going to clean house, fix his organization and assure the public that no organization he is ultimately responsible for will ever be forced to sign an agreement with these statements in it again:

Regards,

TS

No - you tried to employ the everybody does defense, in an articulate way I will admit, to try to avoid the difficult questions. The burden is on you - not us, particularly when you consider the reasons (per Seeper) the fines were imposed.

Well, EV has a point. If the man who holds himself as the "Moral Light" for other conservatives admits that his organization has "made false statements in seeking to solicit donations, failed to properly administer money it had collected, and withheld documents sought as part of an 'investigative subpoena,'" then what must the "less moral" conservatives be doing? ;-)

IMO, this is another blow for conservatism, especially after all the recent Congressional scandals.

Jesse Jackson is a socialist grifter.

Alan Keyes is a constitutionalist grifter.

The major difference here is that you earn your living off a grifter and I don't.

You should be ashamed of your hypocracy.

"Just for the record", your post is still ridiculous.

Truth shall set you free.

Thank you very much. I would've missed this if not for the ping.

I really appreciate Mr. Seper's diligence in sticking with this story and the related stories as Declaration Alliance etc, are involved. I think he's shown very well how the Keyes organization(s) and their associates, are able to ingratiate themselves with unsuspecting dupes like Simcox, and sucker them into money-making schemes over and over. List rentals, consulting fees, caging fees, etc.

They've literally made their fortunes off latching on to the issue du jour, for years. It's disgusting.

Hi H'up: Keyes is much like Jackson in the sense both have made careers and fortunes from (you'll love this one) **glomming on** to the issues that are dear to the extremists who support them. Both are immoral but I dislike Keyes more for turning out his daughter in such a humiliating way and invoking all that phony moral righteousness that made him look like an ass.

Keyes has gone so far around the circle he's met himself coming around the other side.

ps: Is glomming a real word? ;)

IIRC, his daughter ended up with a full scholarship to Brown after all the publicity, and was on her way toward establishing herself as a con-artist for the gay/leftist community.

Sometimes I wonder if Keyes, Kristol and a few others didn't think all this up in college or somewhere thereafter: "I'll target the moderates, you can target the far right...."
