Rachel Pendray, a sophomore pre-nursing major from Houston, was shot to death at the Brook Place Apartments in Huntsville at 11:30 p.m. Sunday, according to Huntsville police.
The 20 year old was killed by Jake Taylor, 24, a Houston resident who police say Pendray had known since high school.
"I'm sure if she was frightened of him, she would have called us," Sgt. Gary Howze with the Huntsville Police Department said. "He's been there before, she invited him into her apartment, and into her bedroom."
Later that night, her roommates heard gunshots and called police.
Police arrived at the Brook Place Apartments minutes after Pendray's roommates called 911. They found the door locked and when no one answered they forced their way in.
Pendray had been shot multiple times. Taylor sustained a self inflicted fatal wound.
"I don't know if he just snapped or what just happened," Howze said.

Let me guess. She probably was going to break up with him and he went nuts.
Poor young lady, may she rest in peace. Prayers for that disturbed young man.

New information about Jake Taylor, the 24-year-old Houston resident who took his own life after killing a Sam Houston student, has come to light.
Taylor's mom, Linda Gonzales, said her son had a history of depression, and was ironically saved by his victim in the past.
"She saved my son's life," Gonzales said. "In November he tried to commit suicide. She's the one who called police and got them to come over here."
Less than a month ago, Jake Taylor had overdosed on sleeping pills. Rachel Pendray was there to help.
"I sent her a Christmas card last night and told her what a special gift she had given me by calling the police and saving my son," Gonzales said.
Was he taking Prozac or Zoloff?
Interesting fact about Sam Houston State. In the early 1900's it was known as Sam Houston Institute of Teaching. The powers that be reportedly decided to change the name of the school after some freshmen started wearing sweatshirts emblazened with the schools initials around campus.
I shouldn't be laughing in this kind of thread but that's funny.
Not only is this a bad place to post that, but it's not true.
Sam Houston Normal Institute
Sam Houston State Teachers College
Sam Houston State College
Sam Houston State University
This does call to mind the old saying, "No good deed goes unpunished."
May she rest in peace, and may God reward her for her heroic efforts to save this young man.
Oh, I didn't know you are in Huntsville. Thanks for posting this - the story is mystifying and heart-breaking.
It has been on local TV news (Houston) all day. The victim was a beautiful girl - cheerleader in HS and at SHSU. Her roommates didn't hear anything before the gunshots - no fighting or angry words.
He wasn't her boyfriend, just a friend. And evidently, she didn't really consider him that, exactly. Her poor father was on the news, being asked about funeral plans and he was just in shock, just spent.
When he finally spoke, he was sighing and said "well, the weekend, I guess - she has so many, many friends and we want them all to be able to come." That was so poignant, thinking of her friends and their schedules.
I believe there is a vigil Wednesday night, either there in Huntsville or here, maybe at Spring Woods HS, which she attended. Very sad story.
Where did you dig-up that "Interesting Fact?"
Where did you dig-up that "Interesting Fact?"
Actually I'm in College Station but SHSU is where I'm doing my Masters.
That's what the official record says. Of course they would try and cover up that snafu for the annuls of history. Those of us who are in the education profession know better though.
Next thing you will make up is Dan Rather is a alumni. Booyah.
Around here it's just "Sam."
Wearing a rut in Hwy 30, are ya?
